Have developed a rumbeling noice in the back of my 93 GLS SWB whilst driving in 2wd. When sound starts the car shudders a bit and it seems as if it slows down a bit. When switching to 4wd the sound dissapears. Has anyone got an idea of what could cause this?

Diff brgs? Check for up and down play at the pinion flange.
Ujs could be a problem, it is best to check for play or binding with the shaft off the vehicle.
Using 4wd reduces the load on the rear driveline, masking the fault

Remove your rear driveshaft and check your universal joints for binding through their operating arc or freeplay in them
Grab the flange the driveshaft bolts to on the diff and see if it has any movement up and down, it should have none.

Diff brgs = Differential Bearings.

Ujs = Universal Joints.

Climb underneath and check for movement at both ends of your tailshaft. It should only rotate, by a small amount, due to "backlash" in the gears at each end. Any movement up & down or side to side is bad.

Good luck,

Scott

Finally found out what made the noise. It did not come from the back but from the front. At the last MOT inspection the garage suggested they replace a CV boot. In doing so they dropped the needle bearing in the steering knuckle. They must be right arsheads as they said that the ABS censor would be damaged when taking out the drive shaft and needed replacement. Took me 45 minutes to get the shaft replaced and new bearing installed. Will never take the old paj back to that place :twisted:
