im a noob and ahve a question
i have a 86 4runner
front IFS and rear LEaf
now i am thinking of buying another 86 for parts but the front of the other one is leaf.
so im wanting t strip the parts i want from it and swap with parts on mine
it has been raised so thats one of the reasons im thinking of doing it for the lift kit etc..
now can i put leaf on the front of mine if mines ifs?
or would i need to swap the chassis's?
and which of the two is better for wheeling fun?

You can fit the solid front axle under your IFS.
Its a common mod.
Do a search under SAS (Solid axle swap).
The reason people do this is that you can get a lot more strength in the Diff components and steering especially if you are planning on running big tyres. Also you can get LOADS more wheel travel from a solid front.

Solid axle under IFS chassis is not a bolt on swap. It would probably be easier for the amateur mechanic to swap the body/good bits onto the f/r lead chassis, IIRC they're the same?
I say explore the limits of the IFS front end before you dig into such a big job.

Just thow a locker or two in and wheel it.
IFS are pretty capable untill you start to push them too far.
I have been in comps with my IFS and kept up with most of the big boys
Have a look at my website.
But I have most of the bits in my shed ready to do the SAS once I get time and money to do it.

All depends on what you want to do. An IFS with lockers will still do lots of mean weekend wheeling. Comps are a different story, IFS is pretty limited but a leaf front 4runner is only maginally better. I would leave your 4runner as is structurally lift it as far as the ifs will allow ( ie 2 inch max). learn to drive it add lockers later, as funding allows till you work out whether you want to go the next step to a more competent rig. 4wding is more about driving what you got to its potential, not so much about hardware IMHO.

yeah it is a pretty serious conversion , wheel it to its limits learn then go to the serious mods , you will have fun with some lockers
