HJ60 Alternator

On my 83 model HJ60 I have a Nippon Denso alternator which I believe is has an output of approximately 55 Amps. I want to replace with a higher output model. I have found a replacement (80 amp), although I do need to find out for sure if it is internally or externally regulated. I'm relativey sure that it is externally regulated - how would I find this out? If I replace the alternator with a different model (ie not designed for a HJ60) then I suppose that th replacement must also be externally regulated (along with a vacuum pump on the back)?

i believe that one has a internal reg not too sure tho, i have a ho denso about 85amp that is internal. The regulator is fastened over the top of the brushes under a little cover panel. I know replacement cost are over 1000 kahunas tho denso's are the ducks nuts so double chek the output before you remove it
EDITi should say replacement cost for complete new denso equivelent unit. Although int. reg. is as cheap as $75

Hey Joel. I found that my alternator is externally regulated. There is a rectangular black box on the passenger side inside guard that the alternator connects to - that's the external regulator. From what I can find, the largest replacement for this externally regulated alternator is an 80 amp unit which is a direct swap. If you have an internally regulated alternator you can also buy an 80 amp direct swap unit. I believe that you may be able to swap the internally regulated alternator with a 120 amp unit out of a Nissan Patrol (only certain models). It should physicaly fit, but I can't be certain that it will work. Would have to check that out with an auto sparky. I didn't get costs on any of these alternators, but I've seen internally regulated 80 amp units on Ebay for $399.
