Hi all,
Need some advice on how the timing belt tensioner spring should be hooked up,it has been some time since it was removed and now im in the process of putting everything back together again and i cannot remember how the where the spring attaches too.
I have tried hooking it onto the nearest water pump bolt but i cannot get the bolt tightened enough due to the spring and it is leaking. any advice or a picture would be great.
cheers

Looks like there should be a bracket (number hi-lighted in pic) that it attaches to.

Mate when looking at the water pump from the front of the motor.
the bracket that holds the spring, is held onto the water pump via the bolt at 4 o clock. Ie the one nearest the injector pump pulley, the lower right bolt.
Your diagram shows the position that it sits at, if you put the idler, spring, and bracket together off the vehicle, it will make sence.
Measure the free length of the spring, it should be 44.4mm- 45.8mm from the inner of each loop. (these are the 2.8, 3L measurements, but I think there the same for the 2L as well according to this book.)
To set tension, fit timing belt, pulleys, tensioner, and spring etc, and then leave the tensioner pulley bolts loose, so it can move freely, (not over loose where it moves around excessively), and then rotate the motor 3-4 times in direction of rotation.
Then do up the tensioner pulley, no need to add extra tension whilst doing so. When these engines get warm, they do grow/ stretch, for want of a better term, and thus the belts tension is ok, if you add extra tension, you will just chop out the bearings in the injector pump.
Once you have tightened the bolts, recheck the timing marks all line up, and then proceed to the next required step.
