Outer Limits 4x4 Board

The old wheel carrier on my Kaymar rear bar has worn out the mounting bracket & shakes around on rough roads. It is just a solid shaft pivoting in a hollow tube. (with grease).

Im looking to upgrade the swing mount to a axle shaft with bearings & thinking about using a trailer hub centre.

Question is what is the standard trailer wheel hub made of ?
It looks cast.
And can you weld mild steel to it ?

Cant think what else i can do, any ideas ?

a cheap way of fix is run a bead of weld down the internal shaft and grind back till it fits tight add grease, wahlah new rear carrier

best idea is to chase up a steel hub as cast to steel is not strong or reliable

Kaymar will do the change over them selves in NSW/ VIC but considering im in QLD i asked if they can just supply their swivel mount but they said no & wouldn't help me.

Im only assuming a trailer hub is cast, just looks like it.

For the time being i have welded the old mount as suggested above but because the carrier shaft was still good & the rear bar slot was the bit that was worn i had to weld inside the tube bit........made it hard to file back to fit the shaft.

See how long it will last.

probably a bit late now but did you look at sleeving the bar, as in finding a bit if thin walled pipe that fit snug and weld it to either the bar of the carrier, putting a nylon disc, like a washer between the 2 may also also help..

I will try and find the link but there is a trailer place online that sell a hub that is turned up and then just need the trailer bearings and stub axle.

Or get an engineering place to turn on up for you.

I actually tried this about a year ago but you are only talking a mm or two.
I tried to wrap the shaft with a cut open aluminium coke can to see what would happen but that was too thick.
Surprised how much wobble you can get from a small amount of wear.

Well thats the next step but sounds expensive as there are two sized bearings involved. Hope to find one ready made.

I had a look at their site & can see two different ones that look the same.

Do you know what the difference is ?

C0131 - Hub : Steel-noflange

C0131B - Hub : Steel-noflange S/line

Just different bearings/Stub axle, I think the s/line is Ford bearings and the other is holden.

That is the place I was trying to find. I lost the link to it when I rebuilt my PC.
They have a wide range and were good for all the filddly parts like catches and things that you can never seem to find
