I just got rockhoppers fitted to my 86 4runner and the problem is I select L4 and only have to 2WD but with the reduction (the front drive shaft dosnt move)I select H4 and still have 2wd ( the front drive shaft dosnt move) and now when I select H4 to H2 it dosnt move across then up it will go straight up to neutral then across into H2 position and no drive.what is the problem?

and yes the hubs are locked in and ive tried to ring the people who fitted them.

you need to take it back to who ever installed it and have them grind down your shift forks. the problem is the rockhopper is alot larger in both dia. and thickness than the standard gears and it wont allow the fork enough movement to enguage 4x4, the lever will often click into the low position but has not selected low range.

dont try and force it into low as you will fawk both the side off the gear and shift rod.

Dont grind down the shift forks! Don't try and force anything.
The size of the gears has nothing whatsover to do with the shifter mechanism.
There's a problem with the reasembly of the case. The instructions are very specific, and include all the torque settings etc. Basically once the oil galley area's been opened up its a completly standard reassembly-all to factory specs.
Hard to diagnose from here but I'd say the problem is directly related to the detents not being lined up, Try pulling the shifter out (in nuetral position) and check if the two forks are both lined up.
Where abouts are you located?
Again- dont grind anything !
Phone will be on all day tommorrow (but i am going to the pub!)

liam i removed my detents balls and springs and had the problem of the shifter hitting the gears, i had the rods chanfered as this was the only way to get them to clear with out rubbing the gear and allowing the case to drop into low.

Okay, I have no idea what's differnent about your case as opposed to all the other ones that have been fitted. There's plenty gone into import models and overseas variations without incident.
Did yours have a 2wd low concversion done to it or that twin stick from kerry whitting? Some other variation???
Yes the gears are thicker as well aswider but the location of the selector rings on the shaft is absolutely identical to stock spec.

no twinstick, the only thing i did different was use tapper roller bearings instead of the crappy ones in the rebuild kit, but that has nothing to do with the gear as it still sits in the same location.

I think I see the problem.
They sure as hell are NOT our gears in the pirate thread.

Theres a few things give them away ( sandblasted finished, course single face teeth, 4.7 ratio not 4.811, no back cut )

And we wouldn't have give you bearings.(not yet any way)

liam, im not saying there is anything wrong with your product, it has been used and proven. I posted the link so 4sum could understand what i was trying to explain with shifter hitting, so shut up and freight me your capri.

i meant in those dodgie ass rebuild kits you can buy for about 50 bucks. i sent mine back and bought the bearings seperately. I couldnt see the point in tearing the case down have the gears installed and using old parts when it was put back together.

is this a new rockhpper you are using or is this the 2nd had one that was for sale in the 4sale section, might make a diff

Thats a problem with the competitions product, not ours. If his got a genuine rockhopper , then this isn't problem. It's a reassemply stuff up. If he grinds the shift rods the problem won't go away and he'll only have to go out and get new shift rods.

The capri's back for sale if you want it - just got a $600 HEI dizzy into it-what a bloody beauty- should have done that years ago.

how isnt the problem going to go away buy shorting the fork.

i also agree that it could be a problem when the case was put together, only a handful of people have had a toyota case apart and rebuilt it so i would recommend taking it back to who ever installed them first.

When I installed my rockhoppers about 5 years ago I had to take a small amount off one of the forks as it wouldn`t move into low at all. Had to take it off the fork on the underside of were the selector shaft goes though it (if my memory is correct)

Another thing that might be the problem is that the pins might not have been put back in the fork and selector shaft.
