whats peoples views on what the most powerful diesel engines are? i would like to get one to stick in an old patrol and the only things im interested in are that its diesel and that it has no ECU to speak of.
reliability comes in at a distant third
so let the arguments begin!!!!!!!

Sulzer RTA-96C about 110,000 hp. Slow-speed 2-stroke
Would need a few nissans to fit it into but.

you couldn't go past a TD42 with a turbo for power and reliability.

check out you tube for diesel drags.... a few awsome yank trucks making HUGE horsepower....and there is even a drag rail with a turbo diesel doing a 5 second pass i think it was.

mate I have the GM 6.2 NA in the cruiser, very impressed with the power and espesially the torque, the gm 6.5 turbo is better again obviously
the benifit of the GM is the availability of ready to go conversion kits for various combinations of gearboxes etc, options to go with a GM manual of auto to the nissan transfer or GM engine straight to the nissan gearbox
there is some nice ford, cummins and detroit options out there also but onversions become a little more difficult an pricey
of ourse you couls also stick to a nissan td42 in turbo intercooled form, you can get brand newies from time to time from the mobs like brunswick who get new or near new patrols and cruisers etc and throw a GM oiler is, or get one from a wreck for the right price, but for my moey I would definatly look at the GM

The problem with the GM engines is they really done like boost... on the other hand the 6.6 Duramax for a big block, and the good ol toyota 1HDFT - direct injection, mechanical pump, no big end troubles... good for lots of power, 200rwkw is fairly acheivable....

good old 3208 cat v8 mechanical diesel single turbo 35psi 475bhp n more than enough torque, can be rigged to near no electrics, just mech. gauges. pretty cheap donks too. not too sure about an adapter

Is that the 10.4L, 800kg one you're talking about?

agree the duramax is a great engine, but conversion kits???
toyo direct injection is a nice engine, but in a nissan??? that just aint right

This V12 mercedes diesel produces 390kW at 2400 rpm
I wish I could find some links but I have seen some Merc diesels in big cars that put out some pretty good power; these might be interesting options.

is that yellow cat motor a c30 v12.
realisicly ur best option is to turbo ur td42 and have it living near the edge or get a yota 1hd ft spend about 5k on upgrades and u will have over 200rwk.
a chev deisel is a very big heavy motor.

that cat motor is a quad turbo v16 (looks like it anyway, correct me if im wrong please), not sure on power figures or size, worked on a few of them when i was over in thailand
had 4 of them running backup power to a food factory

He has an SD33
Worked much on chev diesels?? they're just the same size as a petrol big block
and about the same weights as a TD42, 1HZ, 1HD FTE...

i wouldnt doubt that my 1HDT motor would be under 500-600kg's fully assembled
needed 2 people to lift bare block

Audi R10, 5.5L, 90deg V12 TDi, twin turbo, generating 650hp, 1100nm, 200kg with a powerband between 3000-5000rpm
According to Audi its the most powerful diesel engine in the world.
It meets the power specification you are after, but not the lack of ECU, in fact it runs the latest Bosch Motronic (MS14) engine management system.
Peugeot also has one, from its 908 HDi Le Mans car.
5.5L, 100degree V12, 700bhp, 1200nm
But in answer to your question, stick with the TD42 and turbo, I am not a fan of cross bred cars

If u want basic cat grunt the 32 series is the go, 1 wire for your alt and 3 for your starter, if u want to get really complicated u can add 2 more wires for a stop solenoid, or just use the linkage

look at the 4bt cummins engine 3.9 litre 120 bhp 400nm at 1200
bout 5 grand for a good runner with a turbo350 gearbox
and with a front mount and a bit more boost will goto 175 hp+
if you are keen can get you 1
they dont rev hard but are a very torqey motor
they come out in old dodge pickups in the late 80s early 90s
and are still made now

Isuzu 4BD1T is exactly the same format, but (obviously) japanese. Revs a bit higher to 3600 and easier to get in this part of the world.

A) isn't the dodge pickup motor the 6BT?
B) I am not aware of a T350 behind a 4BT, I believe the T400 had the SAE bolt pattern used by the 4BT in the "frito lay" step vans where these combinations come from.
C) Apparently people have gone as high as 250hp from the 4BT, but they have a less favourable pump than the 6BT and so make a bit lower specific output at their best.
D) I have spent some time drooling over new, crated, 4BTA's (intercooled) used by ADI (Thales) in the HSEV tractor.
E)Kiwibacon, so just how different is the architecture and pump between the Cummins and Isuzu motors?
Steve.

Bore, stroke, compression and # of cylinders are identical. The head layout is different (exh and inlet on opp sides).
The Isuzu's all use inline pumps (Bosch A or P type) compared to the VE rotary pumps used on almost all the Cummins. I've heard the inline pumps are capable of delivering more fuel, but it's heresay.
The cummins turbos are physically larger and seem to thrive on high boost levels. Whereas the Isuzus came with either an IHI RHB6 which starts to go downhill fast above 15psi, or a version of the garrett T25 which due to a smaller wheel size can't deliver such high boost at lower engine speeds.
The main difference is people who've cranked the snot out of an Isuzu are hard to find. Where's every man and his dog with a cummins has welded the wastegate shut and cranked the fuel screw as far as it'll go.
I've gotta add though, while the potential of the Isuzu and Cummins engines is great, the Nissan 4.2 must be capable of something similar. Just spend the time and effort strengthening it where needed rather than shoe-horning something else in.

Seems to be general trend towards the TD42 Nissan motor here (the serious replies anyway); and that would be my choice too with the amount of querying me and my father have done on diesel engines.
When asking at a Diesel workshop in Brisbane "What diesel engine can you get the most out of?"; the reply given was "We can work wonders with a six cylinder Nissan Diesel, and do alright with the other Jap Diesels". This enquiry was for Hilux, and the idea of a Nissan motor in the lux was rapidly abandon, but it does seem that they are a good solid motor with plenty of potential.
