transfer case problems....need help!

the transfer lever in my 80 series diesel cruiser has started popping out of low range on downhills only. seems to be fine coming up hill.
anyone had this problem and what was the cause?

seen this in 40s etc, usually fixed by a well placed occy strap :lol:

mate I dont know much about what would cause it, but it would be worth checking the bush in the selector

my jabber did it a few times. nnot sure exactly why it did it but i found that if i applied a little bit of pressure on the lever it would hold in place.
the trol doesnt do it at all

Had a 75 series cruiser that did the same thing. Only on really steep down hill tracks, but that was when you really needed it though. Would make you shit bricks when it let go and took off.

After this happening a few times I would select H4 on the steep hills and go down like this. Was better to ride the brake a bit then end up wrapped around a tree at the bottom of the hill.

This happens on my Lux.
I was told that it is caused by my aftermarket low range gear set not having the correct taper (not sure if thats the right term) machined into them.
It can be fixed by fitting a heavier detent spring.
I have fixed it with Tinys method at the moment :) .
Another cause can be body lift causing interferance between the transfer stick and the hole or boot on the tranny tunnel.

I had this once , and I changed the gear knob, as mine was non standard and it fixed it for me. The original was much lighter so it was probably acting as a weight on top!!! :) :) :)

thanks for the replies guys, don't have a body lift so it's not that. pulled the gear selctor out this morning and the spring in there was pretty stuffed, heard of people putting washers in to pack the spring tighter but that didn't work. Couldn't get a spring anywhere today being a sunday so i found a thermostat in supercheap that had a spring slightly bigger and modified it to fit, changes from high to low alot smoother but went for a run this and it still popped out on steep downhills. so frustrating, days like today make me wish i got a gq instead of an 80. anyway, any other suggestions fella's??

Heavy Duty Shift Spring
Is your transfer case popping out of gear on the trail due to Advanced Adapters-style low range gears? This heavy duty spring will reduce or eliminate this pesky problem. Easy to install from outside without disassembly. Use one spring for crawl box, two springs for rear transfer case.

a mate is having a similar problem with his 60, after consultation with the experts :drinking: we decided the best fix was to buy a nissan. ;)

hey 75 cruser, went to order one of those marlin crawler $4 springs, they charge $72U.S to ship it!!! think i'll give it a miss.

Have you checked to make sure your body mounts are all ok. If your body is out of alignment it would be hitting on the lever knocking it out of gear on downhills.

70 series had a factory fault for popping out of fifth on a downhill...

didn't advertise it but the old mans 73 middy got fixed up in wollongong with the factory kit about 5 years after he first bought it...

Check your engine mounts, my 40 did it until I changed the mounts.

The twist in the driveline was pushing the shift lever against the hole in the floor - popping it out of low when I lifted the throttle.
