alternator charging

Post by macca81 »

so our VW buggy needs to be jumpstarted all the time coz it needs a new bat, but thats a seperate issue, when checking to see if it was getting any charge at all the multimeter was saying that the alt was generating 12.2V, now this is enough to run the vehicle, but is it enough to charge the batt at the same time? should it not be closer to 14 or 15 volts??

no, it has an alternator... i know this because i took it off a subie and stuck it on the VW instead of the generator :P

oh and the dif is that at idle the alternator will generate 3 times the power as a generator, has sumthin to do with the number of brushes or sumthin...
