How can you tell when clutch dying?

Hi All,
I have a 91 GQ wagon with 287,000kms and still going strong

. A few months ago I noticed (I am a bad man I do not look under the bonnet that often

) the clutch fluid level dropped gradually from high to close to low as per the markers on the reservior.
I checked for leaks everywhere and found none, the slave cylinder was reconned 5 years ago and shows no sign of leakage. I drew a line on the reservior with an artline at the level of the fluid and checked it regularly. It never moved and the clutch is not slipping or showing signs of being worn out.
I have had the GQ for almost 7 years and have not put a new clutch in it and it does not get a hammering all that often (except when we go away a few times a year) and mostly putts around locally. When the car was serviced a couple months ago the mechanic topped up the reservior (even though I did not ask him to (excellent service compared to some places I have used in the past) still no probs with clutch and fluid levels are not dropping.
Later this year we are planning a trip away towing a 1 tonne Jayco camper trailer from Perth to the NW of WA I just want to know if I should be concerned abut the clutch dying based on what I have said above
Cheers

make sure ur master cylinder isnt leaking back thru itself, i had this happen on 2 of 3 of my patrols, one leaked back into the cab and under the carpet so from a quick check i didnt notice anything and couldnt figure out what was goin on and the other leaked back into the vacuum diaphram for the booster but it started to weap from where the cylinder bolt to the booster.
just an idea

if you put your foot down and the revs go up easily but the vehicle takes time to respond, then your clutch is goin.
if you do the above and the revs fly up and the vehicle just keeps on going on its merry way with no change in pace, then your clutch is gone...
i found out the hard way... so if you notice it slipping at all, get it fixed... its no fun driving 50km back to civilisation doing 0-80kph in 15 minutes... its a long trip... also dont recomend snatching someone for 50m outa a very sticky bog while going up a steep hill... apparently that wears ya clutch out rather quickly

I found this problem out last friday when i got my car back from a dyno and now when ever i hit boost the car will rev up and when i take my foot off the throttle it will try and keep driving
I was told it could be my gearbox (hope not)
It was the pressure plate on my clucth just giving way becuase i tripled my hp and 6x as much tourqe at the rear wheels and i got a standard clucth by the way that has done 180K
I hope it's the clucth and i can get hold of one that will stand up to my needs
Cheers

Excedy Safari Tuff clutch pressure plate and bearing is around $595 should happily hold what you have, i'm not even using that model and mines great.

when your doing 120kph in 3rd and you flat change to 4th and it goes crunch
my clutch has been "on its way out" for a while now.
i finally got my new clutch today and gona get it fitted on thursday.
sorry for the hijak but how do i know that the "premium" clutch i got is actually that?
i too it outa the box and was a little supprised actually.
i was expecting to see heaps of "meat" on it like a brake pad but it looked like it had fark all on it

i bought a second hand clutch from a wreckers years ago when i was on my Ps and it looks like it the same as that old one
or is it got more to do with the pressure plate or something?

Mulisha, grab yourself a diesel fly wheel and a 4terrain clutch... higher clamping pressure, will bolt straight on

got everything to do with the pressure plate. If you flat change gears and it crunches it would more than likely be your syncros not the clutch

X2, a worn syncro will get ya every time here, im currently driving a 2 yr old VW van daily at work with a worn syncro in 2nd, it sucks balls, big time... gotta remember to get the revs right all the time

Hey J-top,
I would remove the shifter cover and back section of your gearbox and check the condition of 5th gear splines. Doesn't take long. If they look at all worn get the new stronger 5th gear and main shaft for your gearbox.

It would be fine at lower rpm unless the syncro is totally f!#ked
