I have just finished swapping engines between 2 sierras (1.3l carby)... i have no mechanical knowledge at all about anything but so far ive done alright. The battery wont start the car on its own (it IS charged) but it will jump start off another cars power, but the engine was running on its own for several minutes and died. there are is no sign of any spark from the spark leads and i have changed the ignition coil and has made no difference no sign of burnt wiring but i cant garantee that ive wired it correctly... i dont know where to start can anyone help.

Maybe timing belt,
pull the distributor cap off and crank the engine, see if the rotor is turning, if its not the belt is broken.

Did you connect your alternator up right, if it started and ran without the alternator topping up the battery, then it iwll slowly discharge till it dies completly.

I have connected the altinator correctly it is charging the battery but the battery still cant start the car on its own....
and the rotor does spin when the engine is trying to turnover....
this is probably a stupid question but i have 1 earth lead about 1.5 foot long attached to the negative terminal and i cant find the place to bolt it, engine or body??? keeping in mind that there is already 1 wire going from negative terminal to the firewall and another to the wheel arch on the other side of the engine bay..
im soo lost...
any help is appreciated

Is it a large gauge cable. It should mount on the bell housing near the starter. Withough this, you will have earthign problems.
