According to my 1983 Service Manual the Vehicle Identification Plate was located on the inside of the right hand guard just behind the headlight. It also indicates that the chassis number was on the inside of the right hand longitudinal chassis number close to the front. I can't say I have ever noticed a number there but have never looked as my Vehicle Identification Plate is on the guard as stated.

And if you do find the VIN the codes are as follows

K : Hardtop, J : High roof hardtop, U : Pickup, V : Van, W : Station Wagon

160 & 61 Model Nos, the 160 is known as MQ in Australia

R : SD 33 engine, M : L28, No indication: P 40,

G : Long wheelbase

My manual does not cover the turbo diesel engine.

Rather KR160 - XXXXXX where X is the number

Mine is K160 being a hardtop with the P40 engine and the service manual example is URG160-XXXXXX being a pick-up, with the SD33 and a long wheelbase.

The manual also gives prefix and suffix designations for model variations but I don't think this appears on the VIN plate- at least I have not looked.

Typical prefixes are K, T Hardtop without rear seat, U, J, V, W Station wagon, L L28, R SD33, L LHD, G Long wheelbase.

Typical suffixes are G heavy duty model, S standard, K auto trans, A chassis "A" (?), Q Europe, R Middle East, U RHD

chassis number is on the chassis rail near the steering box on mine, took me a while to find, was getting nevous, attacked the rail with degreaser wire wheel and the a real bright flood light and i could just read it, the must be very shallow from the factory
