Trouble getting into 4 wheel low

Post by chook555 »

G'day everyone its been a while since I was last on.
I have a 94 GQ with 194k on the clock and I had to tighten the front wheel bearings, this I did with no drama's.
So I went to engage 4WH to make sure I put the manual wheel locks back on properly and again no drama's.
But when I tried to engage 4WL it would not go, the ATP light came on and when I tried to engage reverse there was this god awful grinding noise, so I tried to put it back into 4WH but it would not go, I had to recreate the grinding noise again and then it went into 4WH.
No troubles getting it back into 2WH.
I have not used 4WL for about 12months and the last time I used 4WH was during the Easter holidays.
Have I stuffed up the manual wheel locks or is the problem more sinister than I suspect?

Hey Bogged,
I was in park and I just checked the instructions on changing from 4WH to 4WL and I am a bloody idiot. I am going to have to get out into the bush more often than I currently am (once a year).
Thanks for the sutle kick in the pants I need that every now and then.

Was wondering also if it was in N or P. As if the car is stopped and the trans is in N or P. You can play around with the transfercase lever for ever and it should not make any noise. Just make sure the lever is locked in. This may need the car to be rolled a fraction.
I have found with mine. It dosent like to change from Low to High when in park. But I think theres a lock out in the auto to stop it.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY....

the atp light is a warning to indicate that the transfer is in neutral and as such there is no park brake (as in P will not lock the gearbox as it normallly would)

even my 5 speed doesnt like to engage low in anything other than neutral.
even if i have it in gear with the clutch in it wont go in easy.
as soon as its in neutral it goes in straight away ;)
