pyro probe location?

hello.

i have a turbo diesel 4.2L GU patrol ute (2001) and am about to install a pyrometer. just wandering where i shouldput the probe?

dump pipe?
just before turbo?

there are no holes in the manifold. but the pyro came with a bush that can be welded in. would the few metal shavings from drilling the appropriate hole be dangerous flowing through the turbo? or should i take the turbo off?

after all that trouble would it be easier to put it on the dump pipe and use approximate readings? is that very accurate?

what are the safe temp readings i should stay under, pre turbo and post

thanks

PAUL

Ive installed 3 into GU4.2 dump pipes, there is no issue drilling and tapping the pipe, just get a 1/8th bspt olive iftting for the probe and tap the housing, you can do it all on the car

more accurate reading if it's in the exhaust manifold. Before the turbo.

im still trying to work out where to put it. would love to put it in the manifold before the turbo. but do i need to separate the manifold and turbo to get rid of the metal shavings from drilling a hole before they go though the turbo? or is it only minimal?

if its too much i will be putting it on the dump pipe, but im going to need help identifying if its the factory fitted one or an aftermarket true 3" dump pipe. i will post pics this afternoon but for now if i could have some more advice on the metal shavings problem that would be great

thanks again

would someone be able to tell me if this is the factory dump pipe or aftermarket 3" job? near the top was a bolt which has been snapped off.

and also info on drilling the exhaust manifold previously mentioned would be great.

thanks

See if berreta has any pics of his manifold. As the GU turbo kit I sold him had a hole drilled and tapped on the exhuast manifold.
I took some pics will see what they had in them as far as details go.

Look what I found in my members thread! OKay I have put a nice little red circle around the spot where it was drilled for the pyro sensor so you can see where to drill. This is obviously before the turbo which gives you a more accurate reading of exhaust gas temps. Let me know if you want more pics or have a look in my members thread http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic ... ht=beretta

that was excellent beretta. but my question then would be do i need to take the turbo off and get all the metal shavings out of the manifold?

and can anyone tell me what dump pipe i have?

I was told after i took my manifold off to put my pyro on that i could have just covered the drill bit with grease so the swarf would stick to the drill and not go into the motor... Dunno if this helps???

Yes.. absolutely... price yourself a turbo rebuild and you will understand why.

is there much work in it? easier to remove manifold and turbo or just take the turbo off? would any gaskets need replacing? anything i should look out for?

thanks

PAUL

P.S . no luck with identifying my dump pipe??

I would definately be taking the turbo off and maybe place something like a peice of carboard on an angle in the outlet to direct any swarf away from the exhaust and out the outlet. But fefintely take the turbo off.

Mate it looks like a 2 or 2.5 inch cast dump to me, mine is three inch and it looks a lot bigger than that one, but hard to say with those photos, can you measure the internal diameter at the flange of the dump?

Measure the exhaust side, internal diameter of the inside of the tube at the flange that joins the rest of the exhaust.

thanks for all your help beretta, but i found out today that its just the factory fitted (read: restrictive) dump pipe.

im now going to get the 3in and put the pyro in there. its the easiest for me.

suggestions for purchasing a 3" dump pipe in south east qld for a good price?

cheers
