100 series starting trouble

Hi y'all.

Got a problem with my 2002 FZJ105R GXL Landcruiser.

In fact, my mate has the same vehicle and has started having exactly the same prob, so we're wondering if other have had it as well.

The vehicles have dual batteries, with TJM IBS setups and new (6 months old) batteries all round.

It initially only happened occasionally, but now it's nearly every time.

What happens:
1. Open car w/ remote. All good so far.
2. Put key in ignition and turn to IGN. All good so far.
3. All lights etc come on. All good so far.
4. Turn key to START.
CLICK.
5. Turn key back to IGN, then attempt START.
CLICK.
6. Turn key back to IGN. Think to self "damn battery flat. "
7. Check voltage. 12.0v starting battery, 12.8v aux.
8. Not too bad, manually link batteries and get 12.6v.
9. Turn key to START.
CLICK. Nothing. Nada. Nix. Nil. Zero. Zilch. F**k all.
10 - 26. Turn key back to IGN, then attempt START.
16x CLICK. Still nothing.

So you get the picture.
I thought this is weird, hook up jump starter. Still nothing.
Hit starter motor with hammer. Still nothing.

Then after trying a few more times, starter cranks once, then stops!

A few more tries, and starter cranks strongly and engine starts normally.
Turn it off, try again it starts perfectly.
Starter cranks strongly, no hesitation.

The fricken prob happens whether it's cold or hot.
Sometimes it doesn't crank for 26 tries, other times it clicks once then starts, still other times it starts first go.

There is no consistency, so my troubleshooting ain't doing squat!

I've checked levels and recharged both batteries on a smart charger.
Done a load test and easily able to pull over 600A from each battery, and over 1000A (max the load tester could check) from them linked.

I've disconnected and re-connected both ends of the the earth leads from both batteries and chassis and from the starter motor.

Done it linked, unlinked, one battery disconnected.

I've cleaned up all the connections with wire brush, inox-ed them, re-connected them.

Still having the same friggen problem!

So I haven't got a clue what to check next... I'm goin spare trying to work it out!

PLEASE any ideas anyone?

Nick

There is a security cct transmitter in the key and a reader in the lock - it's a possibility it's playing up.
Have to check the book for diagnosis.

sounds like it could be a problem with the computer not reading the key and sending signal to immobilizer, 100 s workshop manual has instuctions to check security system.

Thanks guys, I'll check out the immobiliser and the starter, see if I can track it down.

Next time it happens try a different key.. Or if it's doing it consistantly enough then start using another key and see if it does it over the next week or so.
Key issues are becoming more and more popular, to the point where it is something you seriously need to consider when travelling outback.
