Jeez a mate had a cracked block in his 8v 1600 and I thought that sucks I installed a 8v 1600 and guess what... cracked block
we ran chemiweld through it and its fine now just hope it lasts.
The turbo sounds nice but I read a thread somewhere bout turboing a 1600 and it was suggested supercharging would be better for off road. I have no experience in either but from what LITTLE I know about turbo you would need to change gearing to have the boost in the right range but supercharger is from idle. But as I said i have no experience with either but both have been done before so both must have pros and cons.

1.6's seem to have a habit of breaking blocks, I have seen a few with coolant leaks between the freeze plugs under the inlet manifold.
It is not possible to turbocharge a suzuki for anywhere near $3.5K
In fact, by the time you sort the management and fuel system you could easily have $3.5lk in it, before you actually buy and plumb the turbo, intercooler, BOV etc.
Go for your life mate, but just be realistic about the outcome. If you want the car to drive properly and be reliable, there will be lots of $$$ in it. there's a good chance that a used 1.6 won't even last through mapping the management on a dyno under boost.
Budget $6-8k and you should have a usable outcome.
