Turbo SD33 research
Turbo SD33 research
All of the following is from a few searches I did of the forums. Can people please confirm or reject the following notes? Most info was gained from
http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/viewtopic ... turbo+size
A standard SD33 can be turbocharged as long as fuel is tuned properly and boost no more then 7ish psi.
If its a late sd33 n/as it has the turbo pistons etc.
A non turbo crank and a turbo crank to suit a SD33 have the exact same part number.
The crank bearings are the exact same size, as are the rod bearings.
Apparently the N/A block is the same as a turbo.
Rods or pistons have the same part number.
Same compression. Apparently not after reading my manuals.
Only block differences are fittings to fit oil lines to the turbo.
87 Onwards blocks have a few extras not turbo related.
The other thing he mentioned was that the heads are different on the turbo motor.
The head is different according to the workshop manual (diesel supplement)
Boost compensator on the turbo injection pump.
The sd33T runs 7lbs boost and fuel to match.
Lower compression to about 18:1 from 21.6:1(turbo) 20.8 (non-turbo) Those ratios from workshop manuals.
Inlet valve 38mm. Exhaust valve 32mm. Can these be increased easily?
Port and polish + match port manifold to head.
What size turbo? Compressor and turbine sizes?
After market oil to air oil cooler. Fitment? Screw on adaptor for oil filter + temp bypass
Upgraded radiator from 37 row 3 core to? Get re-cored or change to diff rad.
Pryo sensor, mounting spots?

You sure the clutch is the same for the TD42 and the SD33? Same for the 4spd and 5spd put into the MQ/MK? I would very much like to runa bigger clutch but do not know of any that drop in...nastytroll wrote:sd33 n sd33t have different pre combustion caps, sd33t runs same clutch as td42 ist alot bigger then sd33 i think 11 inch aposed to 9 inch, most internals are the same, cant remember the rest been a long time since I've worked on these
hope this helped
The block is not the same for the SD33 and the SD33T. The SD33T has um how to say it...oil ports that the SD33 n/a does not. These are pretty important to keep the engine lubbed/cool under the stress of a turbo. At least that is my understanding...
I have talked to several Nissan diesel pros here in the USA. ALL of them say do not turbo the n/a motor or you could very well blow it up. yet, there are many people in Aus. who have turbo'ed the n/a motor and have zero probs. May have something to do with how well the motor is taken care of and how hard it is flogged plus how much boost is being ran.
I can tell you that the injection pump is definately different.
I ordered a SD33T air cleaner for my SD33 n/a and it doesn't fit....genuine Nissan part too. It is just a touch to thin height wise.

According to my Jan 86 160 Series (MQ) parts book the P40 and SD33T used the same clutch cover assemby, Part No 30210-C6000 superseded by 30210-C8000. The P40 clutch is 11" - I have just been out to the shed and measured one. However for some reason the disc assemblies for the P40 and SD33T do not have similar or overlapping numbers. This may be because the input shaft for the P40 is a larger diameter than the SD33/SD33T one.

the american sd33 n/a is different from euro/aus spec..
as they didnt have patrols there,it was used in the ih scout..it is different inthat it does not have the piston oil squirters..it is not suitable for turboing..
however..euro/aus post 1980 (maybe all) are suitable..do it..blocks seen to be same other than t has extra oil ports to feed turbo.(have heard has extra oil galleries, but nissan manual does not confirm this.)
heads are different..swirl pots larger on turbo.
head gaskets different..
ip different..
comp ratio SAME according to all manuals i have (incl gen nissan)but they only run 6-7psi standard..
turboed my sd33 n/a mid/late 80's engine..
runs garrett 2052s (soon to have vnt fitted)
cosworth (ex ebay) intercooler
standard ip.(modded for more fuel and in cab variable fueling..ie like a slug to rocket ship control)
15psiboost.
EGT GAUGE
large no muffler exhaust.
large intake..
standard n/a head gasket and head.
goes rather well if i say so myself...totally reliable so far.

I am lookin at an SD33 rebuild kit from Roodog 4wd spares on ebay and apparently the SD T kit is alot different from the standard kit, and if i wanna turbo the standard NA SD its another kit again? What the? Am i been had on or what, i'm going to ask him for some specs tonight. Also, my manuals state the comp ratio on the turbo is higher then the NA So i don't know. IF anyone is stripping down their turbo can you take some photos of the engine when your doing it, like around the crank and that sorta stuff. Just want to see how much work I need to do to run say 15psi and not break something.
Cheers

a standard sd33 will handle 15 psi all day everyday if the egt's arent to high and the motor itself is kept cool.
they are a very very strong bottom end. but they can have head problems if you let them get hot

Pre 1983 blocks were little different. These had a few water ports to the head missing. The heads were different after 83 aswell. I had all this trouble after buying a N/A turbo'ed... with a cracked head.. Story short bought a brand new genuine turbo head 1300$ had no trouble bolting it onto a N/A block all the ports were there that had to be.
Its no secret that is it hard to keep and SD33 cool!!! Oh yeah ALSO had trouble getting a clutch.. It was slipping OK get proper turbo clutch,, yes also suits TD42.. Ok pull g/box out need another flywheel aswell.. I thought a could re-drill the flywheel but the N/A and turbo flywheels are different
