1HZ noise

I have just bought a 80s with the 1HZ and it's got 380000km on the clock and was wondering how noisey are these motors normally. as mine makes a rattling noise around 2000rpm, i know most old diesels make this noise but would like to know were it comes from. tapets, injector pump,or injectors. apart from the noise the motor runs sweet. and when the motor is under load it isn't as noticable.
Just one more thing, having trouble changing gears in the morning. mainly second and third, just had the gear box rebuilt, new bearings and synchros, not sure wat the problem is cos once it warms up it goes fine.Oil i have should be fine according to the manual, any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks ,
Troy

Hey mate, I've a 1hz aswell, 201kms, same noise between 1800 and 2200rpm. Just had tappets adjustad, did squat
Apparently they all make this noise sooner or later depending on the flogging, but dosent seem to affect them too much so I've beeen told. Gazza!

They tend to have rattle from gearbox input bearing, does the engine appear quieter idling with your foot on the clutch more than off in neutral?

mate i bought an 80 340,000kms on it last yr.
made a weird rattling sound.
i heard it could be big end bearings and tappets...
in the end....
it was a sheared off bolt in the alternator bracket.
so it can be hard to tell where the noise is from sometimes???

1HZ's can develop a rattle in the timing gears when they have a few K's on them due to the teeth being worn this is noticeable at the rev's you mention are you running 15w40 diesel oil or 20w50 sometimes a thicker oil or a quality oil additive will help .
As for the gear shifting if your running 80w90 gear oil in the box it WILL be hard to shift when its cold if the box is tight from being re coed, these box's have some issue's I've started using straight 80w trans oil in them seems to fix a few problems ,the 1st 2nd synchro drum in these box's is a big heavy unit that thumps ,bangs and rattles when the box is in neutral and can be the cause of some unidentified noises too.
None of the things I've mentioned are death sentences for these vehicles there more annoying than anything and I hope my long winded reply maybe of some help .
Cheers.

Use 75/90 gear oil in your box
Years ago Toyota replaced some crankshafts for a noise at around 2000rpms, sometimes they were fixed, some were not. If it was a problem these motors would be blowing up everywhere, but they are not.
