Rod Holders on Front bar.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with the legalities of placing rod holders on the front bullbar of my Rodeo.
The only place I can put them is in the middle of the bar. The ends slope backwards, and therefor will put the holders at an angle causing the rods to pass over the middle of my windscreen anyway.
Ideas? Links?

Has been covered before but there not legal!
Any think that protrudes past your bar is illegal even the fair lead for a winch!
You could make up a bracket that but's the holder behind your bar with the tops at the top level of your bull bar but other people will have ideas!

Make them easily removable so when they're not in use they're not there.
In victoria you are not allowed and sharp protrusions or additions that could pose a risk or increase the likely hood of injury to a pedestrian.
Personally if i was scalped by a rod holder i'd be pissed to!

QLD rules stae that they "must be removed or retracted behind the profile of the bar when not in use"
Also IRC it states that they must be mounted as close to the PS of the bar as practicable.

Yeh I can verify they are 100% illegal in qld, pigs got me the week after I got back from Fraser last year! I had no idea they were illegal, argued until I was blue in the face. They had a defect station setup during peak hour and were specifically targetting 4x4's with rod holders. Picked up another 5 just while I was stopped.
They did however mention they are legal when in use. I told said pig that I had a 4 foot rod that would permanetely live in my rod holders from now on. He loved that hehe

I am tempted to buy a cheap telescopic rod and weld it in there.
Then again I could just spend the extra 15 bucks and get the removeable (sic) one.

if u got hit by a 4wd with a bar then i think u would have more things to worry about other than the rod holder

My sentiments exactly! I spend my days at work fixing people that have been in car accidents/struck by cars ect, there may be 1 accident in a million that the rod holder might cause a bit of extra damage but its negligable in my opinion. I can understand why they are illegal though as there is always the chance that 1 person may have survived if the rod holders werent fitted so I only fit mine when using them now. Honestly just dont need the hassle of dealing with these pricks.
At to the guy with the slam dunk comment.... I honestly couldnt care less about a $40 fine, offered to pay the fool on the spot. Was extremely upset at the blatant revenue raising in effect, good to see my 49c in the dollar going to good use.

I see people everyday with rod holders fitted to thier cars without rods in them.
Theres 2 reasons this occurs, either they are too dumb to know the laws on something they own, and use (or dont use as it seems in most cases), or they dont care about the law, and like to place other road users and padestrians in greater danger. Either way, they should be getting a fine of $150 and 3 points and the vehicle should be towed away. If i was a cop or a QLD transport officer i would be booking every single one I see, and issue as many fines as I could.
There really is no excuse for driving around with empty rod holders, and i hope every one of you numb skulls gets fined hard. You give four wheel drive owners a bad name.

So youd rather have a rod in your bar that doesnt need to be there, and put padestrian lives at greater risk???? Than get a shifter out, and remove the thing when its not in use? You sir, are exactly what harold scurbby talks about when he says 4wd owners are fucking idiots.

you too.
I hope you or someone you love is hit by a car with rod holders fitted. They probably will not survive an accident that would otherwise be surviveable. Maybe then youl wake the fuck up.
When your using it, thats fine, when your not, get a shifter and take it off you lazy fucks.

are you a doctor? Have you got any idea what a low speed impact is?
Were not talking about people hit by a bullbar at 60km/hr, they are dead no-matter what is fitted to the bar.
Were talking 5-20km/hr, where they will get broken bones, maybe even head injuries. If there head hits a fishing rod holder at even 5km/hr they are dead, no question.
And yes, it is a very small chance that the fishing rod holder will be involved in said incident, but who the hell gives you the right to chance someone elses life.
I would have thaught someone in the medical industry(i assume?) would have a greater respect for human life.
Your attitude is exactly why we need fines in the modern society, you dont remove your rod holder because it is potentially lethal to padestrians/cyclist/etc, but to avoid a fine.

Why are people still referring to police as 'pigs' these days
, I thought that went out with the 80's
? Heard a few QLDer's calling them pigs still, must be a QLD thing I guess
(Yes, I'm a Victorian living in QLD
)

That tax bracket hasn't existed for years and based on your profile there's no way you would have ever been in that tax bracket

Why not mount the rod holder right behind the cab in the tray?
Legal and they are still easy to get to......

Why not make soft foam rod holders that firmly "grip" the rod, but are still flexy enough not to count as a hard protrusion?

probably not, but you have a reason for having a weapon attached to your bullbar, a crap reason IMO, but a crap reason is better than just cause your lazy.

If rod holders really make no difference then by the same logic I could duct tape a couple of samurai swords to my bullbar and not make my car any more dangerous.
It's silly to whinge about this one, when it's so easy to just take the bloody things off if you aren't using them, or fit some that don't protrude.

guys its frickin qld we go fishing to often to take it on and off every second day and besides would a little bit of pipe hurt maybe we should all get pool noodles for our bull bars sliders etc etc
i dont think that rod holders are a major cause of fatality in low impact crashes
the law is wrtitten obviously so that 1950 greasers didnt drive around with frickin spikes hangin of the front of their car
ps who has big spotties that hangs over the front of their bull bars
do your tyres hang out past your wheel arch does putting on wider flares thus making your car wider make for side swiping accidents
gimme a break seriously if we where that worried about car accidents we wouldnt be allowed to drive em
they are just bloody rod holders
in shadows defence he probably hasnt updated his profile since he registered back 03he has prob dropped out of grade 10 by now

There is about 5 use full replies in this thread... this wont be one of them.
Isuzurover gave you the info you need, find the legitimate source, read it, understand it, apply it. Its not that hard.
Acting like a spoilt sh#t head when the cops pull you over is asking for trouble, ever heard of treating someone how you would like to be treated? imagine if you were doing your job, saw something that was wrong or could lead to big trouble, and some young punk mouthed of at you when you approached him about it, you would probably punch them out.
If what your doing is not illegal, and you have the means to prove so, graciously inform the police with the evidence there and then and get on with your day.
Trav83yo and others, how about we conduct a little bit of outerlimits4x4/mythbusters testing to see how much rod holders hurt at 5km/hr+? Didnt think so.

Flares are places on to defelct a passenger away from your tyre and top stop your car throwing rocks up into the air.
I think you should not be allowed to drive a car. You are clearly a complete moron.
I will update my profile just for you asshat.

lol at Shadows new profile...
i swear everytime this comes up i cant believe the idiots that reply...it is against the law to drive around with them on your car when they are empty...end of story..i remove mine before i even leave camp on Fraser Island to drive down the beach if i dont have rods in them...it is an easy job that takes all of ten seconds..i found a holder at my local bait and tackle shop that has a bracket that bolts to the front bar and the holder piece is attached to it by a pin and a lynch pin to lock it in place...cost me $25 from memory (about $5 more than a standard rod holder)..how about instead of throwing $40 at a fine, throw $25 at your local bait and tackle shop and never be hassled by the boys in blue (who in my view are only doing there job anyway) again..or never have to whinge on a 4wd forum how you got booked for doing something illegal...
dave
edit...if anyone ever ran into my missus or one of my kids and they had empty rod holders on the front i would remove said rod holders from your bar and rework your anal passage with them..they can make a difference in an impact..if they struck you on the head (even at 5km/h) they would peel you open like a sardine tin...
double edit..for the morons who still cant understand what my holder looks like i will get a pic of it in the daylight, or maybe even a video of me removing it to show how easy it can be seeing as we go fishing every second day up here (i want a job like yours)
