1uz Vs 7mge motor swap

OK I am not sure how long I can live with the performance of my 2L-T. It's not terribly economical, it's gutless and is prone to overheating.. and i want to run 35's
and still be able to maintain 110 on the highway with a load on board. (into series two lux)
So now the real question ... what motor to swap into it ?
The 1uz seems like the popular option at the moment, but sees to require a lot of work to get it installed and looks to cost at the absolute minimum of 5k to do a half reasonable job of it.
Then there is the M series engines, cheap, provide more than adequate grunt for what I need, can be mated up to my R series box with another yota bell-housing, and with a head stud kit/head gasket should be pretty well Toyota tough as well.
What other pro's/con's am I missing out on ?

v6 commodore, crank ignition and coil packs that will run underwater, and torquey, cheap to get, easy on parts. 7mgte would be nice only heads like leaking too...maybe a nice 14bt diesel??

A head stud kit is no biggie (well not when your doing a motor swap). That should stop any gasket issues.
I am not a fan of the commaode V6 even when it is in a commadore (I understand that it would certainly make the Lux move though)
If I go the bomadore route I will need adapters etc ... but from what I have seen the M series motors can be bolted in using all yota parts. (I would just need to keep a list of em) .. and if I decide down the track I want a 200kw motor .. well thats pretty doable as well (cos that would be just perfect for crawling
)

Hey Fella,
I'm in the middle of doing a 1UZ and I have already done a 7mge swap on my daily driver Surf. The 1Uz is 5k all up I guess, and the 7m was about 2500 all finished, heres a link to my 7m swap. Bear in mind I could have used some cheaper and second hand bits, but In wasn't particularly interested in saving a few pennies here and there
http://www.offroadexpress.co.nz/modules ... pic&t=3999
Have a good read
Best thing I ever did to that Surf, goes great and is slightly more economical than the petrol 4 banger that was in it
She'll do 150kph
but its scary as at that speed, I wont be doing it again
You don't need a head stud kit, either replace the gasket (best option) and tighten the studs down an extra 25-30 ft/lbs, or just tighten it down some more if you don't do the gasket . I had to make new engine mounts coz of the petrol 4cyl, but a 2lte I think You can use the factory mounts

Im feeling lazy
so ive cut and paste some of my old post u might find interesting!!
any questions ask away

I just put a 7mge (3 litre straight 6) supra motor in my hillux. Its a bolt in conversion with the right parts. Its no rocketship but a shitload better then the old 22r. This was my first ever conversion and i had no major dramas! 7MGE has about 142kw from factory.
]
All the info you need is at
www.supracharged.com.
Went the 7MGE because it puts less strain on the rest of the drive train where the 7MGTE turbo would blow the standard g52 box to pieces!
Truck is only for camping and getting away not racing.
There is no carby version of this motor that i know of!!!
7mge head gasket prob is an easy fix!
graphite head gasket, APR head bolts torqued to 72 footpouds.
No Probs
As for 7mge's not liking to rev i disagree!
It shits all over the 22r.
You need to ask your self what you want out of your truck?
If you want a high power truck be prepared to spend big!
I was going to do a commodore v6 conversion but they are to expensive for what u get. It was around $2500 just for the conversion kit alone!!!
That is not including labour, motor, gearbox, consumables and all the "other little stuff" If you go for the v6 be prepared to either go the automatic option or keep rebuilding your G52 gearbox as it wont handle the motors torque.
I wanted a cheap conversion that had as little custom parts as possible and that's what i got. Nearly every part of my conversion is an off the shelf Toyota part and they all bolt up. The 7mge makes its power further up the rev range then the V6 so its easier on the gearbox. Your already moving when the power kicks in.
The v6 has better torque but this is what will blow your gear box apart.
I tow a customeline camper behind my truck with ease at 120km down the highway ,and towing from the lights i can keep up with traffic easily.
As i have said it is no rocket ship (on par with 3.4l hilux I'd say) but it is exacly what i wanted, a well BALANCED truck that is easy to get parts for and didnt cost a fortune.
my 2c
Cheers

As for bolting up to the r series gear box I'm not sure!
Mine bolted up to my G52 box with the supra bellhousing.

I think they put the r box behind the 7mgte in the ma70 supra, so if you get that package from a wreck, you could bolt an 4wd r box behind it...the normally asperated 7m got a w box behind it.....the 7mgte is about 200kw and they do like to rev, they also have coils and crank ignition...
However....for thesame money....2jz natural asperated makes almost 200kw without turbo and is VVTI gives it torque down low...power up high....real high

How difficult is the 2jz conversion. What did they originally come in, with what gearbox? Can they be used with the G or R series box.

R box would be minimum....bell to box would be the problem with w....the 3 litre 2jz came out in the jza100 supra 1995 ish on there was a 2.5 1jz before that 90-95, keeping the wheels on the ground would be the biggest issue....

a 2jz. is a 3.0L twin cam 24valve inline 6. it runs twin turbos. a common upgrade is getting rid of the twins and a big single setup. i know a guy on the coast that has done one of these conversions in a lc 2 door torana. it has a set of forged pistons and is running 39psi plus the addition of n2o(nitrous). its a 9 second car and the motor is reliable, they are a very strong motor.
the guy that has it is Matt from Sure Shot Automotive in Kawana, give him a call, im sure he could point you in the right direction if you are contemplating the 2jz.
Can pick up a toyota soarer front cut from around the $3500 mark.
Cheers Joel

Maybe you need to take the 45min drive up here to Albury and I`ll take you for a run in the hilux. Or next time I`m taking it to the strathboogies you should come along
You`ll go home from either wanting the 1uz

See the drivetrain bits for sale i'm selling a 1uz and the adaptor kit kit to suit cruiser box (h) the price that's up there is for engine and all the rest of the shite and the adaptor kit but i will separate and sell the engine seperately for $2100-$2000 or somewhere near that.

the MR2 is a rear mount 4AGZE 1.6 tl twin cam efi supercharged 4 cyl not an inline 6 and the m series were not supercharged from the factory

The 2jz is in the JZA80 supra 1993 on, the 2jzgte is the twin turbo. WTF is a JZA100 Supra, dont know where you got that from.
Soarer's have the 1uzfe V8 or the 1jz twin turbo inline 6. I sold a complete running 1uzfe soarer for $3500 just before christmas so you should be able to pick the engine on its own up for FAR less than that.

So do the supras/soarers with the 1JZ/2JZ motors run an R series box?

After a quick search of the internet it appears the 7MGE will not fit into a YN67 can anybody confirm if this is the case or not?

I will be headed up the the next albury/wodonga 4wd club meeting..
I 1UZ would be nice.. but I doubt that it will come anywhere near the budget/mechanical skills I have in mind..

The 2jz would be insane in a Hilux, in standard form it would be a weapon and it doesn't take much to boost them up.
I'm sure they run the R series gearbox too.
I've had a few Supras in my time and the 7mgte (turbo) engine is a strong one once you do the graphite gasket & good head studs, they are capable of delivering massive power and are reliable.

right so a 2jz motor will bolt straight up to R151f then? it maybe time to start scouring ebay if so
i reckon a 2jz will have plenty of power for my bundy gearbox
so whats the electrics on it like? they easy to plumb in?

dr who? wrote:right so a 2jz motor will bolt straight up to R151f then?
No it won't.
It uses a R154 which has different gear ratio's and the input shaft is also 30mm longer so you would have to cut and shut the bell to fit a R150/151.
