leaking beads

Post by brighty »

Ok,
Just up for some ideas on how to stop air leaking out the beads, mainly on the outer one. I got a set of 36 swampers on 15x8 non beadlocked sunnies...

was thinkin bit of silastic/silicon but would make it a biatch to get off next time... any other thoughts????

Cheers ;)

just buy a set of tyre pliers and clean the beads out when they leak, its easy to do

tube them and carry a handfull of tubeless valves if you rotate a tyre on the rim and rip the valve off, break one bead whip the tube out, put the tubeless valve in and reseat and inflate, to get you home.

high lift jack base on the tyre near the rim and jack the car up, bread pops off with no effort!

cheers

I am fairly new to tyres and jsut had a quick question. What "holds" the bead to the rim and why do you have to "break" it?

Air pressure holds the beads to the rim. Have a look at a bare rim. Around the circumference, where the tyres fit, just in from the edges, there is a lump that runs around the rim. When inflated, the bead, or inner edge of the tyre, sits between the edge of the rim, and this lump. "breaking" the bead, means pushing the bead of the tyre in toward the centre of the rim, over this lump.
As for a leaking bead, find out why it leaks. If the bead and rim are in good condition, and clean, it should seal. Lay the tyre down flat, and pour soapy water onto the bead area. Where the bubbles are, hit the TYRE with a hammer, maybe repeatedly, this should stop the air leaks. If the bead is damaged, from using tyre levers for instance, then a tube may be the only way to stop it.
Personally, I would use a stop leak solution before using silicon on the beads.
