Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Just about to buy a 2001 td5 Disco with manual trans. Has about 107000k's on the clock. Any advice would be appreciated.

So all I have to do is put fuel in it every now and than ? Why does it only have a tape deck ? Does this model have the centre diff lock ?

2001 probably doesn't even have the mechanism for the diff lock fitted, going on my folks one - however it can be retrofitted (as per my folks one!) You can check if it has the mechanism in place by feeling around on top of the front output housing on the transfer case for the little stub sticking up - which probably isn't going to help you much if you aren't familiar with rovers.

Manuals better than autos, as the autos have a bit of a habit of dieing, especially when not serviced properly. Check for missing nuts/studs on the exhaust manifold where it bolts to the head, they tend to warp and snap studs off - fixable (machine the face of the manifold), but its a pain getting the remaining bits of stud out. ABS lights on dash while driving can be expensive fix (new modulator). Front driveshaft double cardon joints (funky looking uni) are prone to explosions, if not checked regularly - IMO due to the lack of grease nipples, I believe someone now does a rebuild kit with grease nipples. Plenty of other little things, I'm sure I did a big list in some other thread, might be able to find it with a search.

Basic result, if you want to buy it, get a Rover specialist to look it over first is always the best option.

Got the hand book yesterday ( pick the disco up on Saturday ) and it states that the centre diff lock may get lock while being serviced and to make sure its unlocked before leaving the work shop. So it must be there. How much is the kit to fit and where can I get one ? Is it just a handle ?

Early 2001 should have the mech installed. My advice buy a kit don't retro fit a early model lever.. PITA!!!

Thanks Mick, That first link looks good, I've joined the second one, just waiting for a reply email . Looks like there a bit more to it ( CDL ) than I thought, what with the re-jigging of the TC wiring.
Is there a limited slip in the rear ? or is it just open ?

If yr TCase dosnt have the CDL mech then you will have a bit to do. Just read the articles about it. I don't think land Rover ever put a LSD in any thing they made..... but i may be wrong. You don't need a LSD when you own a LR it doesn't get stuck

Thanks mick, picked it up today. Bugger got more K's than I thought.
Noticed that the fuel filter is very unprotected next to the rear wheel, is anyone selling stone gards for them.

Word of warning about that filter

don't unscrew the plastic thing o the bottom unless u have a spare (read get a spare) or a screw that fits and keep it in the glove box. they get brittle from the heat and when you unscrew then for a service they can snap. If you want a stone guard get one from a TD5 Defender as they come std with them. But i have never heard of anyone having problems with the filter related to stones or sticks but you never know!!

That is so funny with the Cd stacker I reakon everyone must do the same thing. Or it might just be us 2

It may as well stayed lost. While it works, it skips so badly that you can only listen to it if the car is stopped or on a super smooth road.
Mine does have the CDL but took it for a drive on a greasy track and the TC works very well. Could only be a issue on sand.
