and shells in general, how do you tell a good one and what makes a bad one?
when should they be changed?

is the underneath of the shell where it meets the rod/cap , is that as important as the shell its self?

any help here would be great, as i am stripping down a short 3f, and to me it looks good no scratchs or marks that i can see( only #1 pulled out so far)

thanks chris

if you dont know what you are doing i reckon leave it alone mate or seek some prefessional help :?

but on that note, get your self some plastigauge, check the tolerances between the bearing in the cap end and the crank journal. should be a cople of thou... -/+

then do a visual insection, check that the wear across the entire bearing shell is even, it must have no scratches and be free of wear marks. hard to say without visually seeing it.. its a rough idea

I say, if the motor's torn down now, do them now. It would suck if you rebuilt the motor to only do a big end in 6 weeks time. Do it once and enjoy the piece of mind. JMO

Mate I just rebuilt my zuk engine , less than 3000 km and its apart again , bearings , rings , seals and all gaskets go in the bin , for the sake of $300 dollars , that's cheaper than a tow from woop-woop , Cheers Paul.

good attitude! Get ahold of a workshop manual and a decent torque wrench and get cracking. The worst that can happen is that you bugger it beyond belief and have to stump up for a new engine, and I doubt a 3f is that expensive either. Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

NB When I rebuilt the 4age in my sierra, the only bit that got messed up was the headwork which was done by an engineer who mysteriously decided not to use new valves, despite me paying for new ones, just removing the old ones, cleaning them up and not lapping them properly when he put them back in. Ended up stripping the head down and doing it myself and its been running great ever since

thats kool! im happy for ya to give it a go, its your motor and your wallet.. but id hate for you to have to do it twice.. it aint a huge job so it should be a great learning curve for ya..

thoroughly clean all components and be sure to tension everything,. make sure you check your tolerences but most of all have fun! :D
