mk diff ratio

Post by rob_rover »

G'day
i have a mk swb, 304 holden v8, turbo 700, mk transfer case, 4.1 diff ratio and running 36" peds.
at 100 km the motor revs at 2500-2600 rpm, would 4.6 diff ratios make it rev harder at 100 km or less?
would it give me a slowler low range?
please help as my pocket is hurting from the fuel bill

4.6's will make you go slower in all gears.

I.E. higher revs at 100Kph

count the number of gears on the crown wheel and pinion and devide them, the number that comes out is your ratio. Easy!!!!!!!!!

it is stamped on the crown wheel eg 38:9 = 38/9=4.22, not the actual numbers but you get the idea

With V8 those revs sound about where you would want them. But remembering on 4.1's and 36" tyres you are probably really doing 120kph which will burn lots of fuel. Slow down to about 85kph (which is really 100) and that should help. If you lower the ratio's ( ie 4.6's) you will use more fuel at 100kph on your speedo. You will have lower ratio in the bush though. You will never have great fuel economy from a V8 in a 4by. I recon the best you could expect is about 18l per 100kays if set up and driven slowly. If your going to putt around in a V8 for economy you may as well have a old diesel slug like me and get as low as 10-12l per 100 in my 60 series 2H
