For that sort of height you would have to go custom, someone like king springs would be a start probably.

I'm pretty sure that 6" 80 series springs will be about 8" of lift on a GQ. May be worth investigating.

I ripped my tough dog stuff out and went lovells coils. They're super sexy. With any thing that high you will have to get stuff custom made.
Naturally with anything over 4" people will tell you it is too high, I am one of those people. However for a laugh I think you should tell him its better to do lifts only in numbers that evenly divide by 5 or it will adversly affect the anti squat <inzert suspension term> ie; try and coherse him into putting in 10" springs. Also tell him something along the lines of "you will be the first in australia"
Then posts pics and questions as to why the 35's still rub...

7" lift plus 2"body, would be much more forgiving on the drivetrain

i cant see this working without major modifications for the front tail shaft hitting the cross member etc not to mention custom caster plates
Posted: Sun Jun 10, 2007 8:29 pm
by offroader-rama
10 inch spring, 2 inch spaces, 2 inch body,
+
7 inch drop boxes, 7 inch radias arms, offset bushes and caster plates
+
and then why not through in some mark adaptor 4 inch portals
==
ALL GOOD 35's hopefully wont rub then

I've got a set of 4's and a set of 5's at home going cheap. Also got a great new welder to join them for you. Would be mad and would save you heaps on custom coils. Theres your 9 inch coils!!!!!!!
Fitting not available.

If you want a answer you will have to pick through the shit on outters.
To answer the question seriously king do 8" coils but they are too stiff, king and dobbinson do 7" lift both are ok. I would sugest goin 6 or 7 with 2" body anything bigger is to hard on driveline

that was a safari n a big POS, had pipe coil spacers, radius arms fabbed from pipe n 6mm plate with big drop boxes aswell, chassis was hacked up to fit drive shafts, had huge tail shaft spacers, was on 44 18.5 swamper TSL's. It had a few problems didn't stop, was hard to get moving, kept braking steering boxes, was un controlable at more then 25km.
AFAIK it was stripped n sold in peices

only a few problems? go, stop, and steer.
if thats a few, what was good about it, apart from looks because it did look tough, unpractical but tough.

Obviously your mate has no intention of taking his GQ off road, or
he is a complete moron.
There is a reason that guys who race 4b's put as little lift in as
can fit for the tyres their running. Its called gravity dude. But hey
whatever floats your boat.
Gone are the days of having a big lift to try and look tuff. might
look tuff round town, but you dont look real tuff upside down.

it's interesting to hear that chpd80 about your opinion as i'm sure you have done plenty of wheeling yourself and to call a mate a moron without knowing him that's cool i can take it best off to going back and driving your shitbox 80 you have and that goes for you to benno saying you love it.you both need pull your head in and shut your mouth if you have nothing intellegent to say.mate's car already has 7'' coils 1'' body 5 link custom crossmember in front so all that is done.
thanks to the people that actually were trying help me out

I stand by what I said 9" coils is just stupid. If you need clearence
for huge tyres you can get modified quarter panels so they dont
rub, etc etc etc there is lots of ways around getting you vehicle
modified to get you anywhere, but putting in 9" coils is being a MORON.
Because its going to draw attention to big lifts in 4wd's and consequently
get more RTA inspections cracking down EVERYONE driving modified
four wheel drives.
Whatever you guys are trying to achive can be done without lifting
your chassis by 9 fricken inches.
Research it some more!!!!!!!!!!

ha ha ha i love it.
idiot
calm down. his input was that if he is so hardcore with his 5 link CUSTOM setup (which proves he isnt into the hard'n'fast (yes one word) shit anyway)
he wants 9 inch coils, call kings or any spring works place, theyll make em.
some people just want big tippy (read flexxy) cars over an awsome car offroad.

forget 9 inch springs, go for the 4inch portals, 100mm higher, 100mm wider, square lift.
I know big dollars, i cant afford them either, but a gq with 9 inch springs is going to make 35's look like 31's so i guess he is planning to run rubber to suit so his pockets are deeper than mine already.
for the record i'm building my sierra with nearly 9 inch lift but it will be 500mm wider than before!
any way if he does do it post a pic

this is just another 4" is big enough anything bigger is stupid shit. what you have should be fine anyone that thinks that its tippy is full of shit or cant drive
everything is perpose built and anyone with a 4" lift is welcome to try keep up with the bigger trucks in tight track full of rocks, it will never happen unless your a wincher, I've said it before n I'll say it again anyone that thinks a big lift is unstable go to a comp n check it out or shut your trap
portals help but they have to be included in lift as a 4" spring n 4 1/2" portal is still 8 1/2" lift, but wait that would make it tippy

At least theres one thing, were all passionate about something,
still stand behind what I said about 9" stupid, but man its great
to have some spirited discussion on here, not tiptoeing around
what you really think.
I dont mind agreeing to disagree. (even if I am right!! HAHA LOL.)
Keep the comments coming, Bring it on

thought bout racerunner coilovers???
just simply removing the springs and shocks altoghther and fabricating up some mounting points to give the correct ride height that your mate's after?

Have to say i agree with al the people on here saying that 9" coils is too high unless you never plan on driving it fast offroad. By fast i mean 100 odd k's an hour not 30. I also wouldnt want to see that thing on the road either as it will just attract the cops attention which is bad for everyone with a fourby.

Why has the attention shifted back to 9" coils being stupid ? I thought it was decided on earlier in the piece that 10" coils were going in. 10" unlike 9" is a nice even number that kind of looks like a telegraph pole and a duck egg - both sturdy rigid shapes. Therefore 10" coils would be better than 9"

as much as i didnt want to get into the arguement of whats too tall,
I had previously had 8inch coils with 3 inch body lift.....and yes 5 link front and custom rear etc.
It DIDNT flop. If setup correctly, it will be as stable as a 5-6inch lift, but obviously slightly higher centre of gravity.....and trust me, mine saw some angles. Apart from the front end wobbles, it drove fine on the road
( low tyre pressures help control the front ) but either way, it wasnt built as a high speed offroad rig.
It was mainly done to help clear the 40inch swampers.
In the end, it went back to 6inch coils though as it was just as good.
but you never find this stuff out till you try, so just give it a go first, then decide what you prefer (or your mate).
