valve clearance

im having some troubles
i just put new big end bearingsa piston rings and a good hone on my 88 GQ tb42,
reading the manual it says to adjust 1in 1ex 2in 3ex 4in 5ex with with piston one at tdc
and to adjust 2ex 3in 4ex 5in 6in 6ex with piston 6 at tdc
but when im doing first lot with 1 at tdc tappets 4in and 5ex seem to be opening
what am i doing wrong? any help would be good
