Stiff Transfer Lever

Hi All
Last weekend I was down playing on the beach at the Coorong. As the sand down there is very soft and I was towing a 6x4 box trailer full of fire wood I put it into Low range. The transfer box working fine then, with the lever moving freely, but at the end of the weekend when I wanting to go back the High it was very stiff requiring two hands to move it. Now after a week it’s still very stiff to move. I have sprayed all the linkages external to the box with WD40 and check for any obstructions. It’s a 2001 Defender Extreme.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem could be or do I just learn to live with it?
