I know that a few guys here have welded their front diffs and have loved this mod, but i saw on the suzi forum that some are welding their rear diffs, is this possible or is it just cause for detonation  to the back diffs on the feroza

Also here is a question I dont know much about. if I wanted to swap front and rear diffs to get lockers would i just get toyota ones and how much would this cost I would say a fair amount

Welding up the back diff is fine, plenty of the hot rod brigade do it as like us they are after the extra traction it affords. Couldn't tell you if it is legal but I doubt it.

More traction means easier to brake something as will put the drive train under more load etc etc but woule be good off road I would Imagine

It’s not legal to weld front or rear but you can get away with the front and the hubs unlocked.

With the rear welded you’ll notice it on the road (chirping around corners) and extra tyre wear. Also bad if you have to have the car inspected every year such as in NSW.

I’d say the rear diff could handle it, it’s pretty beefy, but you may do an axle or two..

As for swapping in Toyota diffs, it is expensive…Mike ran up a cost sheet a while back, ended up something like $7000 without lockers!

will a toy centre fit in the ferwoza rear?

is it possible to keep your housing, squeeze a hilux centre in and maybe a set of custom rear axles, unless the feroza ones are the same spline :?:

thinking out aloud here

sort of like what sam did with the toy / rover setup

Newbyferoza - Having been a Feroza owner for 4-5 years, my advice is to get used to the vehicle offroad before getting mods done. You will be suprised with what you can do in a Feroza, even stock. And I can tell you each time you go out, it will suprise you with what it can do.

Once you get to know it a bit better, and will only take 5-6 drives with people, get it lifted and better tyres. After this, the last thing you can do is to weld the front diff. I didnt get mine welded, but I didnt need to.

IMO all a welded diff does is make it more comfortable driving the harder tracks. Its all about wheel placement and the right amount of momentum, cause there is not much you can do for the lack of wheel travel (apart from the full toyota change over $$$$$$$).

thanks heath28 i see you are on the gold coast, where are some good tracks to go to for a bit of fun, not too hard just a bit of thrashing

yes i agree with heath... when i first bought my roza, both of my hubs were rusted open so i every time i "locked" the hubs in, they didnt engage. then i went thrashing thinking that i was in 4 wheel drive... when i wasnt... and i found out what was up with my hubs and was shocked with what i had done in 2 wheel when i thought i was in 4!... and it doesnt end there... i've pulled out full sized 3 ton ford broncos who had totally bottomed out, a ton and a half of dirt, etc etc etc. this is ONE TOUGH TRUCK!! and i love it... and again, heath is right. its about how u drive off road.... your approach/departure angles, speed, where you lay your tires, gearing (very important!!!), rpm, and the works... usually come with experience... and different kinds of soil require different kinds of 4wheelin. every time i thought i couldnt be more surprised with my roza, she throws another surprise at me... she ceasts to amaze me! so with that, have fun, and go tear some stuff up!

There is not much around.......
For a bit of fun,
Crystalvale at the back of Murwillumbah
Ormeau - some of the less hard stuff through Ormeau from the water tank end. I really havent done much here though.
There are places out near Ipswich which I have been too.
LCMP - Probably the best place, provided your with people who know what there doing.
For a really long weekend - Manar is pretty good, but a long drive.

For beach driving, Teewah beach to Double Island and then to Rainbow Beach.

Bubs, I'm pretty sure the Feroza diff is basically an 8" diff...it "may" be possible to squeeze some toyota gear in there, would have to be IFS rear inners for my widetrack.

In answer to the other question, yeah..I've basically stopped modding the Ferwoaza, and basically stopped taking it offroad now I'm building my FJ40..that will be my beater, and the Ferwoaza will be my long tripper ;)

G'Day Newbyferoza,

Don't weld your rear diff unless your Feroza is an 90% at least offroad bushbasher - driving around the streets with a Lincoln Locker is Yuck - really Yuck !! :D
With IFS & a SWB like the Feroza the best gains are made by increasing rear wheel travel as much as possible & putting the Lincoln Locker up front.
You will not squeeze Toyota ANYHING in the rear diff housing or centre - although the design is similar the Ring Gear is at least 1/2 - 1" smaller & carrier is tiny in comparison. You would need to custom make everything - BIG dollars. If you really want a rear locker without doing a full front & rear Toyota swap, then just do a Toyota custom rear swap. Pickup a 2nd hand Toyota 8" rear & take it to a Diff / Axle Specialist. Get them to install the entire Toy rear diff & axle, mod the sprong perches to bolt to your original springs, fit your Daihatsu drums etc so your brakes are unchanged & still run your original wheels. Small driveshaft mods & you are away. Then pick any Locker you like ( Lockrite, Detroit, ARB etc )
Also have the benefit of larger 8" R&P gear, larger axles etc as well.
Won't be cheap - expect in the order of $2000 but it is a lot cheaper than custom modifing something that wasn't meant to go in there in the 1st place :D
Or for $200 you can Lincoln Lock the front

Later -
