Don't ask me what fits what, but I about 95% sure that 1L Sierras are 4.1 diffs, LJ80/LJ81 are 4.5 and LJ50(2 strokes) are 4.8 . If you really need those 4.8's theres a LJ50 hardtop for sale on Ebay I think, though parting it out would be sad

Do you have any photo's off the diffs and diff centre , does it look like centre on diff housing has been changed and what size axle's do you have , Cheers Paul.

count the teeth on the crown wheel and devided it buy the number of teeth on the pinion wheel this will give you your ratio maybe whats in texta is wrong
and i'll have a look as soon as i can. i have some assorted 1ltr diffs and lj80 diffs centers. i may have something remind me friday, if i haven't posted any thing as i may forget.

We have had a few 1.0 cars set up with 4.88 gears here in vic. Yes, they are lj50 gears.
Yes, they are gettng hard to find, and do break.
Front and rear R&P are different, I don't know If they are interchangable.
I haven't seen your third members Mick, but I believe the best way to go (for one end, if not both) is swap a complete lj 3rd member as these have a thrust bolck which helps the ring gear live. 1.0's do not have the thrust block. (it is a bolt visible on the side of the 3ed member roughly in line with the pinion.
Christover may be able to give more advice about what swaps with what, he has run 4.88's for ages and has tried most combinations.

If your having a dig, Sorry, I re-read my thought I was making sense.
If it's an innocent question, the third member is the drop out centre section - the cast part that unbolts from the housing which contains the centre, pinion and bearings. (this is not removable from a Dana style diff)
I believe that LJ50 diff gears will go into a 1.0 3rd member, but that front and rear lj50 gears are different (and I am not sure which end of the lj50 gears go into end of the 1.0)
The cars I have seen and played with running 4.88's all seem to have an LJ50 third member on one end and a 1.0 on the other, and I am unsure why.
I believe the LJ50 third member is superior to the 1.0 third member as it has the thrust block.
Christover will be ale to assist further.

it was a innocent question i have allways just called it a carrier, either in houseing carrier as in dana, salsbury, borg warner etc or removable carrier ie suzuki, highlux,gq patrol etc
so now i can call it a 3rd member as well
thanks steve

Mick just do the Diff swap. Max offset 36' swampers and LJ50 diffs do not mesh well.

I may be able to add to this further?
I believe that only front diffs on 1L's are interchangable with LJ diffs. i.e. if you wanted 4.1 diffs in you LJ50, you would need 2 front 1L diffs. I think this is WRT the 'third member' Steve's mentioned (I always called it a carrier too). This may be due to axle splines, and this can be rectified by new side gears.
I'm not as sure on this as I was before though, maybe 75% sure?

I think the yanks are the ones that call them a third member. (Or, more correctly, a dropout third member)
I have no idea why
You are right though, whether removable or not, that part of the diff is the "carrier"

All 1.0 litres are 4.1.
In relation to housings, traybacks have the brakeline bracket on the LHS of the housing, stylesides (both LWB and SWB) and HT's have the brake line bracket on the RHS of the housing. No other differences from a driveline point of view.
