I just picked up a 2nd hand td42 donk with a denco turbo on it and the turbo is tired needs new seals and bearings and balancing. For the same price as a reco on this turbo i can get a highflowed gen nissan hitashi turbo that has been rebuilt and highflowed and only done a small ammount of km.

I know the dump pipe on the nissan turbo will be facing the wrong way and the inlet housing on turbo can be rotated to fit my air intake setup without to many worries, but will it preform aswell as the denco turbo? denco turbo's are schwitzer turbo's (i think thats how u spell it?).

Just wondering what peoples opinions are? Im just trying to put about 10psi of boost into the td42 to give it a bit more legs with 35's on it i dont want to build a race car i want decent economy and power.

Hiflowing turbos means that either the compressor and or turbine wheel have been enlarged. This can have an effect on low down boost response. All turbos will easily generate 10 psi. How quickly they get there is another thing.

Keeping the same spool up rate will mean gonig to a bb turbo, with probably as much extra fitting as doing the hiflowed one.

Hope this helps.

Hitachi are mitsibushi and Nissan bought Garrret so be wary if you are getting a hitachi it may not be a direct fit. Also as mentioned Hi-flow means many things, a good dyno tune is a must if fitting an unknown turbo. You really cant go wrong with a rebuilt standard unit, especially if you want reliability.

all 4.2 factory turbos are a hitachi ht16.
all 3.0's are a garret t24

common misconception that the 4.2's run a garrett turbo. this said factory gu manifold is a garrett t3 flange pattern so alot of garrett turbos will bolt straight up. unfortunatly gt25's and 28's wont. www.horsepowerinabox.com however do sell a gt28 with a t3 style exhaust fange that is almost perfectly suited to a 4.2.

the factory ht16 is also easily upgraded as the single turbo rx7's run a ht18 and after a little machining the comp wheel from one of these or a few other different ht18's can be fitted (highflowing) they can flow rather large volumes of air and make great power figures.

if you can get you hands on one of these cheap go for it, otherwise id go a roller bearing turbo. these can be had for about 2k plus fitting if you shop round and it will haul ass and boost up to 20ish psi from idle to redline
