Straight gas 308 hard to start when warm

Got the patrol running again after it decided to start expelling large amounts of oil everywhere.

AFter new head gasket, inlet and dizzy gaskets it is still showing a little weeping around the front and rear inlet gaskets in the valley but nothing like it was leaking. I have both crank case breathers disconnected but there still must be some blowby not being vented to cause such pressure?

Now back to my original problem, Im running straight gas 308 and in the mornings (or whenver the engine is cold) it fires up and goes straight away, no problems.
Once its warm it will crank for maybe 5-6 seconds or more before it fires up. If you turn it off then start it straight away, it will fire up again ok, but for instance at petrol station when I come back from paying, I have to crank for 6 seconds or so.

Any ideas?

I had a very similar drama with my old V8 4 Runner and V8 Hilux. Have had it a couple of times with the mav too now. I found that my battery was on its last legs. It has enough grunt to turn it over in the morning , but when its hot and fighting a tight motor with higher comp , the battery under load does not deliver enough grunt to get a good , clean spark to fire the gas.
I will probably get the crap flamed out of me for this info but when it happened to me thats what it was. New battery fixed it.

Yeh I was pondering whether it might be an ignition issue given im running a points dizzy and havn't done any maintenance on it except i changed the oil today :)

However I would have though this would effect it MOST when the battery is cold. It starts first kick on 1 degree mornings.

If it starts good cold but not hot, worst if left 5-10 minutes it is likely the secondary seat in the converter is leaking causing the engine to flood, this is made worse if the front lock off isn't mounted directly to the converter. Heat in the converter causes the gas to expand past the secondary seat and flood the engine. Usually have to crank a while to purge the rich mixture.

Thanks Joel. That sounds accurate actually because I suspect the front lock off valve isnt actually working correctly since i can hear a the gas "hisss" after the engine is shut down.

Ill look into it tommorrow cheers.

Idle was set too rich. Got new air filter and leaned it out now starts perfectly.

In or clockwise is lean, out or anticlockwise is rich on a Impco 300a mixer.

I was told you push the prime button on the vaporiser when its idling.. it should die after 2 or so seconds, not straight away like it used to. Set like this it seems great.
