my friend used to have one and it broke down on her all the time. they are:
- unreliable
- ugly
- unibody design
- russian build quality

My dad had one for 8 years and i drove it to school every day for 2 years (he has a jeep now which i cant decide is better or worse). The only thing that ever went wrong with it was a clutch and a gearbox in the whole time...thats pretty reliable in my book and it was well looked after and offroad it kept up with everything very easily..Not something you would buy if you are looking at serious stuff or modding tho.

Mate has had 3 of them to tow Jetskis out to Boat Harbour, round trip, 5-8klms. hes happy, the things only cost him $1500-2000!

There are better cars out there, everything is backwards, like window winders, etc... Not good ...

If you're really into serious stuff and modding then a couple of diffs and a whole heap of steel tube is enough to start the 4wd experinece.... well maybe the every weekend for 2 years in the garage experience...... then finally the 4wd experience :D

I think much of the issue with Lada's like any cheap car (and the Korean cars also fit the bill...) is the type of people who buy cheap cars and the care they give their cheap cars....

Based on the fact it's for a 17 year old girl and I doubt she wants to get her nails dirty then I'd say (as I did previously) buy a Sierra instead, unless you're not frightened of doing the work on it yourself.

There's some good bits in the Lada design that make them popular for mud races though... maybe she's planning on competing in that class?

An unnamed council in QLD bought 22 of them for there company cars quite a few years back......the whole 22 were returned in 16 weeks...money back..thank you very much....you dont fuck with the AGO.
Door handles fell off, roof lining peeled, paint crazed, various mechanicial issues...even the wiper blades rotted...and all were brand new off the boat.
Cheap......nasty......hard to get spares.......flimsy in accident tests....forget it...get her something thats not gonna end up her coffin.

no to the lada,,here's why

i have one,,
custom exhaust, webber, 2"lift no front sway bar, ballbearings everywhere, fulltime 4x4,,off road really good imho,4 coils center difflock,,50% heavier than a zook,
i could go places where i had to hold up my mates zook for him,

down falls for lada,,
drive axles brake
wheel bearings are high maintance,,
vibrations,vibrations,vibrations,,
because the car is originaly LHD the drivers side foot area is half the passengers, and the steeringwheel arm is at an angle that points into the centre of the car,,while,,
the drivers seat points out the window,,
the petrol tanks are tiny and have a common problem of not breathing properly and therefore klm between fills is short,,
there's no commercial lsd's or diff locks,,
you need to put a shower cap over the heater air inlet when it rains,,
lada mechanics have two horns and big balls,

why does a lada have a rear window defroster?
Ans. to keep your hands warm when your pushing it,

bearing lock up in a lada ,not fun, trust me!

for god's sake unless she has her own tool box steer her well away from them,,

Scruffy,,
a GQ owner,,lol,,that should say it all.

Lada - it's Russian for "butt-plug"
