Nicbeer , does your car leak gear oil when climbing up stuff , is this the reason you are changing the seal , Cheers Paul.

Dont mean to hijack youre thread, but has anyone solved the oil leaking out the gearstick hole on inclines, mine does it a lot?

I think i have solved it , where the shifter sits on top of the gearbox there is a plate which holds the gear shifter. I took my gearbox out with the tailshaft still in and stood it up at 60 degrees. Nothing happened so I waited and and about 30 seconds later a stream of oil came pissing out. There is a small hole in the back of the shifter plate which is actually the breather hole for the gearbox. It is about 2mm , so I drilled it out and tapped it 6mm and put a bolt in it. Then I drilled and tapped a hole on the other side 1/8 bsp ( bought tap from bunnings in a set ) and fiitted a new breather tube and fuel filter in engine bay. This oil leak looks like a flogged out rear seal and you won,t see the hole while the gearbox in the car. You dont have to remove gearbox to fix it , Just take off the shifter boot , then remove gearshift , then undo top plate , 4 x bolts and remove outside of car , then you can redrill and you won,t get crap in your gearbox. If you do fit a new breather make sure you use 5/16 oil cooler line and not fuel line as it will turn to jelly. Most spare parts stores sell the 5/16 - 1/8 bsp hose ferals. Mine is a 84-85 model so have a look and see if this is your problem , cheers Paul.
