To Lock or not to Lock

What do you guys prefer to run or use as lockers, both rear and front.
Was reading a document on a permanently active locker. You engage either H4 or L4 and the locker comes on as well and stays active till you go back to 2wd. For the front wheel its automatically active, but unlocks when you turn, then relocks when going in a straight line. Thus which locker do you guys use and trust ?

I'm unlocked, though will probably be going with the Jack McNamara air locker. I tend to think it is a better design than the ARB unit.

I had rear arb & detroit in the MK. Was really ggod but a pain in the sand if u just wanted a open diff. Now in the maverick with twin arb's it is good, and has more steering than i thought it would. I think they are more user friendly :)

very happy with the arb, its only locked wen u want it to be.. no hastles.. i dont like the sound of that one that unlocks the front when you turn?? you might be turned, but only have 1 front wheel on the ground, and where a normal locker would pull you though that design would be like an open diff and could result in u bein stuck.. i like it locked when its locked and not when its not!

ditto - then if you don't like the back, save up a bit more and replace it with another arb

I'm a control freak - ARB

...but then if I had a big Ford F250 king cab with a bench seat and column auto, it would be an auto locker... DROOOOOL...bench seats ROCK!

oops i forgot you can't get a front ARB for the front diff
well you can get a modified ARB one from the US but that is $$$

a detroit is your only front locker option

Okay someone had to admit it first!!!!

I got a Lock rite in the front of my 80 series and I love it. Only smashed one diff and a pair opf CV's in a year so I guess Im doin Okay.

80 had the Lock Rite when I bought it and I am used to it now, but if I had the choice I guess I would have gone ARB. It really comes down to what type of driving you are doing. For normal weekend warrior stuff I think that the auto locker is fine. But if you drive rock (undercuts etc) the Auto Locker will cause you grief.

My Project will be welded rear and ARB / Traction control front.

i've got a lockright in the back of mine. people reckon they can be bad in the wet, but i've _never_ had drama's with it, and i'm running mud terrains as well.

of course air lockers are the best cause you can pick and choose whenever you want em engaged

Dual detroits in a TJ.

Sure the rear kicks around if you get on / off the gas a bit too quick. But they were cheap (US hand luggage) and I don't have people yelling "turn off your locker at me" :)

I like the fact that they are auto and for my type of driving so far haven't wished that I could turn them off.

Gordo has dual detroits in his TJ and installed a Tera 2-lo to help in tight spots.

Another Canberra Jeeper just returned from the US with dual-detroits in his luggage too.... must be a (Canberra) Jeep thing ;) afaik most of the Sydney Jeep guys seem to go ARBs (more rocks(?)) Wooders will pipe up here and say he has a front lockright :)

Got a rear ARB, will be going with teh samein the front. Had my truck been a part-time 4 wheeler (its a Land Rover), I'd had gone with dual spools simply because they are cheap, the front don't know about anything during "on-roading", and they save a lot of weight/hassle/bla bla bla...
Detroits are just a compromise  ...

When i get a 4b will definately go the ARB choice,
im a control freak too :D

detroit rear
cig front

because there cheap.

will eventually be going front arb and than rear arb.

i find the detroit can slowly wear axle splines due to the on off on off.\

soon as you lock in your hubs and engadge 4xd the font welded diff puts abit to much unwanted strain on the stock steering box, at least with an air locker you can remove the unessecary strain when not all wheels need to be locked but your've still got drive in the front ,assisting in the not to hard tracks
