Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Recently, I was backing into a parking spot at a shopping centre in my Hilux ( 4by ). When I backed in I "lightly" tapped the concrete wall with my towbar.
On leaving, I put the Hilux in first gear and I heard a "bang " and it popped out of gear. I thought that was strange - never done that before.
Got on to the road ( in first ) accelerated, then took my foot off the accelerator then heard a louder "bang " and it had popped out again ? I tried this a couple of times, and it happens everytime.
When driving now, I have to really "push" the gearstick forward hard to hold it in gear.

I have had conflicting reports on what it could be. Some have said it is only coincidence that it happened after I "tapped" the concrete wall and that my gearbox has sh@t itself.
One person ( mechanic ) who hasnt seen the car,( just rely`s on what I have told him) has said that it is the "cups" ( dishes ???? ) at the bottom of the gearstick in the gearbox, and that they are worn. He asked if the gearstick is "sloppy " I said, it is. He is sure it is the cups, but I dont know ?? Seems a bit more serious than that ?????

Any ideas ??????

This sounds some what true you need to pull the gear lever out and make sure it is not fouling on the floor and that the lever is pushing the selector completely into gear or it will jump out if the detent is not holding it .

when it jumps out of gear does the gear lever come back into the nuetral position?

even though it hit the wall im thinking its a syncro on first gear, this is what makes it jump out, i dont think your cab would have moved enough to make the stick hit the floor..

About 2 years ago, I got hit up the bum by a car doing about 60 kmh. ( in the dark - he had no lights on ) I wondered if that could of had anything to do with it ? I have driven the car a lot since then ( not all the time though - I have a work ute ) and havnt had a problem till now.

the cab wouldnt of moved at all cause the towbar is attached to the chassis so i think the towbar hitting the wall and this happening is a fluke

but it would be easier to have a look ath the cup prob first before pulling the box out

can't be a synco as it only slows the gear so that is does not crunch when selecting gear once it is in it's held by the detent on the selectors and the synco hub drives off the gear not the syncro.

But... if there was to much endfloat in the transmission it could jump out of gear to.

Does it only do it in first gear? what about 3rd and 5th?

from what ive heard they is a nylon bush that gets moved. You just push it back. You can see it apparently when the boot is off (apparently)

Yea, it only does it in first gear. It goes into first without a problem. Its just that it wont stay there, and makes a loud "bang" when it pop`s out.( every time without fail ) All other gears are fine.
The gear bix is very loose / sloppy though. ?????????

It's a common issue on Toyo Hi Lux and Runner gearboxes.

If you are finding that she doesn't like to change down from third to second as well, then it is just day to day wear and tear.

Sometimes putting a lighter grade of gear oil in helps. It was recommended me to me and worked with the changing gears bit.

Does it make a humungus thump when it jumps out of first

Yep I know that thump, still scares the absolute crappas out of me when it happens

I think it's a Hilux gearbox thing.

Should keep working though.

I had a car with this problem it wasn't jumping out of gear though, you can tighten them up but I couldn't figure out how to do it so had to leave it.

Well, I cant even get it in first at all now. Starting off in second. ( Ohhhhh my poor clutch - stinks )
I now have the "dishes" ( cups - or what ever you call them ). There is no way that, that will fix the problem.
When the mechanic gave me the "dishes" I told him that I couldnt get the car in first and I dont think these "dishes" will fix the problem. He said, maybe it has worn to far now ?

Going to put them in this weekend.

Well, I put the "dishes" in and it has certainly tightened up the gearbox (lever ) but, it wont go into first and slips out of third.
Time for a new gearbox $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

We took the gearbox out, then got to the clutch.
The clutch plate springs were loose and wobbly, and the surface was uneven ( worn more towards the centre - in spots. ?????) When we pulled the lot of my mate noticed that a bearing had disintergrated at the back of the motor ( dont know the name of bearing )
We actually wondered if the gearbox had shyt itself, or it was that bearing that was causing the problem ?

That souds like the spiggot bearing. That holds your input shaft to the motor.

just curious how sloppy should the lever be? my ln106 is very loose in first to the point where it moves to nearly the 5th position 1st is sometimes hard to get in so i was wondering if the dishes or cups that were mentioned earlier would fix the problem before it gets too bad.

Yea, its the Spigot bearing. What causes them to disintergrate - just wear and tear ?

spigots wear out due to not enough oil in them if they are the bronze bush type, or if roller bearing, they just fail.
When you fit new ones, ensure they are fully impregnated with oil if bronze, if roller type, just ensure there fitted square.

If there is alot of movement in the input shaft, I would be putting in a new bearing on the input shaft, including the bearing on the inside that joins the main shaft to the input shaft.

Chances are thats all that may need replacing.
