I'm looking into putting drop open shackles on my 84 Hilux it as of now
only has a 2inch spring lift i relies that i will need longer shocks and brake
lines but i was wondering if any one has had any experience with these
if there no good then i am content with extended shackles

cheers and hoping for some great feedback

They give great flex, but when they are opened up arent really putting any of the vehicles weight to the ground to drive forward. Your money is better spent on some IFS springs and custom shackles for the rear.

so when something is at full drop and isn't fitted with drop shackels it does apply pressure to that wheel :?:

thinkin the same thing sic. get superior ones if you can. they work the best but alot of work is needed for them. you would be best off getting the drop shackle kits (around $2300) as you get all you need for good flex. you need new springs etc. to run the drop shackles properly, ive seen them run on normal springs and they suck. mick will tell you that himself. fatassgq off the forum works at superior and can tell you what you need, or call them.

thanks i was eventually going to make custom spring packs up out of ifs or
some other type of leaf pack combo will these work or will i need to have
something special for them to work at their best? will they work all round or
would i be better using a combo say extended in the front and drops in the
rear? and how much are they?

drop shackles

A mate put drop shackles and ranchos in 96 lux with standard springs and it gave it bugger all more, the shackles wouldn,t even open half way due to stiff ass stocko springs even ifs, so my point of view its not worth spending the money on them unless you are going to do the rest. (custom springs , ladder bar and relocated long travel shocks) superior ones are the best about $450-$500
could spend the money on a locker
and I second that comment sic
cheers Dan

yeh for sure, im an apprentice too, money would be better spent on a locker if your just gonna short cut whole thing.. just play with your packs its all just trial and error till you et something to work, i spent weekend after weekend on mine and im running standard length greasables with 2 inch spring, sagged abit after a stuffed around with them for a while but hey, mine works good now!! I wrk on the fact that elbow grease costs nothing.. my 2 c. Cheers, Chris

yeah ben just find a wreckers with an ifs hilux and rip the rear springs out and put them in the rear of your lux and the rears up front and take alot of the leaves out of the pack

or just take leaves out of the packs in your ute now

and as for the locker just weld a front centre up for now until u can afford like a air locker or lock rite diff

filpper shackles are pretty good way to go though

cheers russell

yeah my mate with an 01 may be putting a 4in lift on his so i may get the packs from him cheap but nevertheless this is what Ive been hearing so far

also can i get some feedback on body lifts i have heard of a lot of cases where the body mounts have broken off because off the longer bolts!

thank you all for the feedback much appreciated

Drop shackles are for ramp queens, period.

:onfire: OH :bad-words: You can use ford springs and have them modded but at the end of the day you'd be better of buying the kit less time and F :bad-words: ing around (mine has ford ones) its how i bought it and it started with 7leaves and is now down to 4 since i've owned it it works ok but not as easy as dan's (sloshy) one which runs the springs you get in the kit also how does softer/longer springs and shackels won't help if shockies are still short all this being said buy lockers first then worry about flex if it bothers you then.

No drop shackels on my hilux and it would be one of the best flexing leaf sprung hiluxs around. But I have spent years n years on it and have tried heeps of different setups till I was happy with it. After having run the front setup for about 3 years now I`ve decided I`m not happy with it anymore  and am going to a coiled front soon. Main reason for this is I`m now wanting to do fast stuff with it rather then just crawling.

so you are calling alot of peoples hilux's "ramp queens" but I know I drive mine and u'll be suprised how much that extra 4 inches makes it so much more stable and controlable , so get back to me when you want to do some real 4bing. :finger:

X2 and if it is at full drop and still in contact between the droped wheel and the ground there is going to be traction :?: i've watched footage of mine and can see when it's being feed when a bit flexed it will drop as it digs down abit till it goes over the obstical or i stop and it will spring back up a bit
and if there no good why does anyone worry about flex anyway  Not speaking as a ramp Queen

You can listen to a guy who knows the local wheeling, especially not far from where you are, another who has competed in god knows how many comps and has spend more time rooting around with leaves than anyone else who owns a hilux, or you can listen to 2 queenslanders who need to defend the fact they wasted their money on shit that doesnt work.

Your Call...........

Dont go more than 50mm and make sure they are as wide as they are tall. Get at least 8 grade bolts, make sure you use washers and get new rubber bushes while your at it. Cant fail.

So with the custom longer softer springs, track bar etc you need to run the wacky shackles, how are you attributing the flex to the shackle ?

Have you tried it without the wacky shackle's. In the past I had run with folding units on another vehicle and while in a controlled setup (like a ramp) it would flex all over the place, offroad I was getting belted by vehicles with far simpler setups.

The reason I dislike em is their ability to unload in an uncontrolled manner. A leaf spring will have to be pulled down and there is some resistance to the movement so it happens slowerand a consistant manner allowing the driver to have a far better idea of how the suspension will react, whereas with a multi piece shackle there is no resistance to the movemet and the axle can drop in a non consistant manner.

After spending $2300 plus engineering (good luck getting those shackles past a cop, engineer or RTA officer) You could get a pretty nice/link setup for that kinda $$ that could pass engineering.
