TD42 Fuel filter

I am in the finishing stages off putting a 89 TD42 engine into a 96 SWB RD28T .My TD42 has a in line fuel pump rather than the rotuary type .The problem i,m having is ,i changed the fuel filter for one that was listed for 92 to 95 and it wont prime at all or fire but as soon as i put the old filter on it fires straight away.
The filter housing has 3 pipes going into it 1. from tank , 2. to pump and 3. a small return from the fuel pump .The orignal filter that was on it is about 2" longer than the one i got to replace it .Would any of ye out there know the part number of this filter i need.
