Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Has anyone got one of the following UHF Antennas im looking at getting one from prestige commuincations whats peoples thoughts on it and whats the best place for prices to buy one?

Warning - they smash. It's a thin fibreglass shell around a plastic PCB. Designed for cosmetic reasons. Buy a normal glass core whip, or a solid wire unit.

5dB isn't all that high either.

GME offer a 9 dB stainless whip from memory - it's about 1200mm long, works well and is much more durable.

I had mine at roof height and broke a couple (I drive lots of overgrown tracks) so I went to a spring base and shorter whip but I don't need very good UHF performance.

Fibreglass rigid whips were all the rage in the early 90's. They slowed convoy speeds to a crawl in the bush because all the drivers would be driving along watching them to make sure they didn't hit something with them.... and then they'd selcall each other to warn the car behind of the low hanging branch 20m in front of them that was going to hit the antenna....

Get the RFI CD9000.

Prestige are great to deal with.

do be careful. They do break if hit hard at speed by tree etc. My GME aerial snapped a foot off the top, still works ok but looks shite. When i finally replace it i'll be getting a sleeker whip aerial as theyre more durable

depends on type of terrain. Flat open land higher dB the better. Hilly foresty areas around 4.5dB is best.

just get a 4.5 whip and a 25w comercial radio

I use an older style RFI that dick smiths stocks as the D4023 for about $79

I've got one on the jeep, one on my mrs' car and one on my work car. My mate has one on his jimny and my other mate has one on his 4wd and his mrs' 4wd, we all like it I've even got a brand new one unopened in a packet in the shed in case i ever need another one, that's how much i reckon it performs

Not all dick smiths stock it but my local one always has them so your local should be able to order it in.

I have been using the CD900 with a lot of success, and have both the 3db and the 6.5db wips that Prestige offers and it works well. The 6db didn't fit under the garage door so for day-to-day usage the 3db stayed on the vehicle and I put the 6.5db on if I had a reason for it. But honestly I rarely needed the 6.5 db option.

They are both very durable whips, of which I never hit the 3db on anything due to its size, and the 6.5 avoided bending on the couple of small hits it received.

I have used this on two vehicles, the LN65 lux with a TX3400 and in the GU with a IC-400PRO and get a good 10km on normal ground. Performance seems to be better with the GME unit.

I generally use Prestige for all of this gear and the service has been great. Also suggest that you give Andrews Comms a go who are good. (www.andrewscom.com.au)
