Turbo Dramas

Posting this on behalf of a mate.

He brought an early model hilux that has had an engine conversion of some kind but the car yard could not tell him what it was. I think it is a 2.4 turbo surf motor.

It has recently blown engine oil out of the rear of the turbo where it joins to the exhaust . Does this mean the turbo is stuffed or is there a seal or bush that gives way?

Just trying to help him as the car yard aren't helping with their $300 small parts warranty.

First thing to check is the oil drain for the turbo.
Make sure that's clear right through to the sump.

If that drain gets blocked, the oil and gas pressure will build up and blow past the seals as you've described.

It might not be the drain, but that's the first and easiest thing to check.

If thats all good i'd say the tbo's busted. May have self destructed or might just be an oil seal either way it'll have to be recoed but hope its a seal cos it'll cost you alot less

My mate pulled it apart and the people before him had used gasket goo to seal it up and it had leaked down into the drain pipe and all but sealed it up.
Thanks for the help.

the other thing is if it has lots of blowby, pretty normal for 2.4 surf, if the breather pipe is blocked/kinked etc it can pressurise the engine and blow oil out the seals. so if you are blowing seals, its a simple thing to check.
