Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Howdy

As the title suggests, what is the optimum thickness RHS to use for rock sliders. I was going to use 50mm x 75mm RHS 5mm wall, but I am having trouble getting 5mm wall, I can get 6mm or 3mm.

Can anyone suggest a place in Brisbane that sells 5mm wall thick 50x75 RHS?

Hi There.

I used 50x50x3mm for the main part of my rocksliders . They do the job and don't weigh a ton.

I just made a set for ADNIC's disco using 65 x 35 x 4mm RHS. They where heavy. 3mm should do. I get all my steel from either Metalcorp or Orrcon, both on Nudgee rd at Nudgee/Northgate,

Id go with the 3mm plenty strong enough and not to heavy.

3mm is strong enough.

I used 65x65x3mm...cause I had it spare in the shed.

I welded two of these together and then welded a piece of 3mm plate underneath. Way strong enough to have landed the Fender on them HARD with only the smallest dent.

How where they mounted

Here is similar to what I am building. I am using 100 x 5mm plate to mount to vehicle, then I am using 50 x 75 RHS as the actual slider.

I would like to build some sliders however how do you get the slight arch in the Disco sliders?

couple of bricks/bits of wood and stand on it

that might work, but I was going to put some small cuts in the top surface, then bend and reweld the cuts..if that makes sense.

Cut reweld will turn out UGLY, its not like its 60 degrees

I just put mine in a vice then slid a smaller piece inside to act as an extension then heated it with a oxy.

I agree and you will end up with way to much arch in it that way even if you put only one to many cuts in it.
much easier to get it right by bending it much less effort required(as long as ya have a fat man handy)

no fat man would have bent mine!!!
75 x 50 RHS with 2mm wall, I ended up having to press it in three points to get the shape (couple of tonne). That is the hardess part, getting the shape right...

How are people mounting them.
I was going to buy some nut inserts for the front and also drill through to the over sill and use long bolts and spacers!

Whats your thoughts?

I welded in crush tubes through my sills for the bolts to pass through. I got the idea for mine off the net , just googled " range rover" "rock sliders" . Took ideas from the styles I liked.

You could try heating and quenching the top to shrink the material just make sure to heat it in even places and try to keep the heat even (if you have oxy set up that is) the good thing about this is if you do go to far you can bring it back by doing the same on the opposite side. Just take your time and you should be right good luck.

Also the crush tube idea sounds great (strong) i think thats how i will mount mine when i finaly do them.

Made up some mounts like this...



Have yet to brace it over to the chassis - lazy - but I have landed on them really hard at Ormeau with no bending of the mounts. Mounts are made of the same 3mm rhs as the sliders.

Have a look on Discoweb.org in the tech section. There is a good design under Hidden Sliders. I'm in the process of building some now. Just going to use RHS instead of refitting the old plastic sill guard.
