Hi rusty, your cranking battery, when fully charged will have a voltage level of up to 12.8 volts, so are you sure you measured the voltage correctly because, no matter what type of alternator you have or how old it is, with a 12 volt output, your alternator is actually putting out a lower voltage than your cranking battery would have, just sitting there.

Any alternator would need to be putting out at least 13.8 volts or you are never going to charge any batteries, cranking or auxiliary.

Cheers.

A mate put a smaller diameter pulley on his rangie alternator
which increases rotation speed! which helps whilst at idle speed!
( it helped get some extra punch down low! )
Is the unit giving a full charge higher in the rev range?

cheers

My usual method is to grab a VP-ish commodore alternator (if it's to replace a single-foot mounting type alt) or an EA/EB falcon alternator (identical beast with a slightly different housing - two feet instead) and bolt one of those in.

Both are identical, reliable bosch units putting out 85A and about $30 from a wrecker, plus maybe $15 for a new brush pack if required, and both are easy to adapt to pretty much any motor.

For more than 85A you have to spend a fair bit more and for most practical cases I can't really see a good reason.

I have a thread on here somewhere fitting a falcon alternator to a G60 motor, and I have photos on my camera of fitting a commo alternator to a Rover V8 (which I haven't put in a thread yet).
