Outer Limits 4x4 Board

i was just looking at a photo of a forward control landi and was wondering if it could be done with a zook using a cab of a carry ute i know it would be unstable or would it you could make a soft top like the unimog. just a thought

Anything is possible, But why? I reckon you'd be better off starting with a 4X4 Carry.

The last carry vans that were sold in Australia were sold in two configurations, 4WD, single speed transfer tray back and 2WD van.

Unforunately the 4WD versions had the tcase output on the LHS so they wouldn't take a sierra/vitara case easily.

Daihatsu sold Hijet vans and traybacks in 4WD. I think they sold about three.

I have looked at this but getting an acceptable tyre size and COG would be very difficult. Forward control vehicles have very different architecture to keep the height sane, and with a carry, that is allowing a 13" rim and tiny tyre. to try to go to something useful like a 31 would be a totally custom project.

Forward controls climb well and are nice to look out of but are @$$%% scary when decending.

The best option to have a play with this idea woudl be an old 4WD express van, a hijet, haflinger or Pinzgauer. Haffies and Pinzgauers were revolutionary when they were the only things available with locking diffs, but I have been on a trip with a well built 6WD Pinzy and it was cool and different but not as capable as you might imagine.

there was a hijet for sale a while ago with ATV tyres onit as a farm car. looked like fun.

google has the great function where you can enter a topic and it does a search on all the web and gives you these results and many of them would be pictures. It's pretty cool technology and I'm sure if people give it a chance it will take off

thats an easy notion for the average web wheeler, but for those who spend more time on real turf, the above logic is somewhat difficult to imagine

as an aside, there are two flavours of forward control landrovers, the FC101 (which was only sold to the military) and a series IIA civillian version.

The FC101 ran a 3.5litre V8 and constant 4WD, with sailsbury diffs front and rear. It had a custom chassis for the application. These are very cool.

The civillian SIIA ran on a stock 109" landrover chassis and used a subframe to slide what was effectively a landrover cab over the engine. They were chronically underpowered and increadibly unstable. Preety much as you woudl imagine a sierra to be if you put a carry cab on it.

sorry buddy i did look thru all the links provided etc. just didnt really know what to google. wasnt sure even what a "forward control landi" is . sorry...

The FC 101's were used in Aust Army up until the late 80's to tow around the Army's Air Defense missle systems. They went for the forward cab to allow carrying the Missles on the tray and needed the extra lenght to fit them on. They were an exellent little truck when loaded up but as soon as you took all the weight off the back were abit scary. A good hard wack on the brakes would see you in "Two Wheel" mode as all the weight is at the front. but with the alloy they V8's kicked asre. I beleive they were the same engine as in the P76's. They eventually got replaced late 80's with the 6x6 landrover made by JRA.
