4Y to 3RZ EFI engine conversion

Have an 86 single cab Hi Lux 4x4 with the 4Y petrol motor. Would like a bit more power without going to a V6 or 8 conversion. Anyone know if the 2.7 litre petrol EFI is an easy conversion and whats required to get one going, assuming its not a bolt in job? Any problems around the bellhousing, clutch, gearbox area? Know anyone who has done one I can talk to about it? Cheers

3RZ-FE Pretty simple conversion. You will need the motor, Bellhousing, clutch and computer and harness off the engine. I bought mine for about $2000 with fuel tank and radiator thrown in. The fuel tank had the fuel pump inside. (3RZ fuel tank is longer but same bolting holes. You just have to move you round bar between the two chasis rails back.)

Cut off your engine mounts on chasis. Clean up and bolt to 3RZ. Bolt up gearbox with 3RZ bellhousing to original crossmember. Drop in 3RZ and bolt to bellhousing. Now weld engine mounts back on to chasis. Now the gearbox is in the correct place and everything still lines up.

Wiring the Computer is not that hard. You will need 2 relays. 1 for fuel pump and 1 for EFI. Can help with what wire goes where when you do it.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Easier with cab off chasis. Motor is close to the firewall on a LN65, But still fits. :D

Thanks for that info Willy Hi Lux. Looks like most of that I can do myself. Will retain standard tank - assume my fuel pump will be OK? Will my radiator (just overhauled) be OK? Wont be running an Air Cond. Know where I can get an engine?

You can keep your tank but you need to run an external electric high pressure fuel pump (your 4Y had mechanical low pressure pump) and you radiator may be ok. Needs to have outlets @ driver top and passenger bottom.

Like Willy said, the rest of the conversion is just time, a little know how and some $$......

How easy is this conversion from a 2l-t to a 3rz (stupid carppy ct-20 blowing up all the time).
Will is it possible to bolt up to the factory motor mounts on the chassis ?

I have driven a couple of 3rz powered lux's (4x2's) and quite like the power delivery you get with them.

What ratio's do the factory 4x4 3rz's run in the diff's ?

I figure by the time I finally hunt down and install a power steer pump and bracket for a 2l-t ($300 if I can find one), Re-co another turbo so there is $400+) etc etc .. I am still stuck with a noisy anceient POS 2l-T and wait for the next thing to break .. I am not even brutal on it .. but everything seems to bust so easily on this truck.

I have seen a few 3rz's sell recently for around $1500 with everything needed. Starter, alt, loom computer etc all there bar the high pressure pump for the EFI

Should be no different than what I typed above. There is one on ebay for $1500. Looks like a good motor but down in Sydney. You could run a VL fuel pump but I rather running the one in the tank.

Thats the one I am looking at, I can get the motor transported for a 6 pack through my little bros work (Kohmatsu ship stuff all over all the time a 3rz is nothing for them) The guy is happy to crate up for me.

I currently have a 130 litre long range tank that I would like to keep, If i go ahead with this I will run a lift pump and a small surge tank before the efi unit (close to the motor) as I am to lazy to change all the lines to high pressure  ;) .. and I have always wanted a bling alloy surge tank.

In my lux which is a LN60 2L Diesel 4 runner chassis I had to cut and move the mounts back.

I run an external VL EFI fuel pump, but will be setting up a surge tank shortly as I have problems once I get on to angles with less than 1/2 a tank of fuel.

I run 4.88 ratio diffs with 33's and seams a rev a little much, 4.5's for a street rig I reckon would be a better shot.

hey, i'm pretty interested in doing a conversion such as this with my runner, you said it's a pretty simple conversion, just wondering if there's any place that would actually do this? would love to do it myself, but dont think i would be able to go without my runner for the amount of time it would take to do it myself.
so yeah, what you reckon? i'm brisbane aswell.

cheers, nick.

Thanks, so I would need to cut the mounts and reweld (no bigged it have a welder and acess to someone who can wled properly .. I can weld but I would never do it on any parts that I could not afford to have fail)

So it's revs a bit hard with 33's .. well thats easy fixed with 35's ;) .. yeah I wish. My 4.5 centre is very noisy so I am running 4.8's out of my old lux.

You'll Pay for it. Usually around $2500 for the conversion.

I'm in the process of putting a 3RZ in a 94 extra cab. We used the 3RZ bell housing and had Marlin build a W56HD and Dual Ultimate for it. I built new engine mounts and it going to have a flat belly so we weren't to concerned about the rear cross member. The engine is 1" away from the fire wall. And it is clocked to 86.5 degrees off of the plenum. The 3RZ is a great motor with lots of power.

If it is a A series auto transmisison, then yes. Get the code off your vin plate for the transmission.

You should be using all of the 3RZ gear - including the ECU.....

Hi guys i know this topic is quite old. Does anyone by chance have a wiring diagram for the 3RZFE?
I recently acquired a 3RZFE auto.
I think it's from a Prado.
I would like to drop the engine only into my 84 Daihatsu Rocky.
Roughly what re the things i need to do to get an auto Prado engine work in my Rocky manual box especially with the electrics?
Still quite clueless with the electrics.

This will be my 1st conversion so i'm getting as much info i can b4 i take the plunge.
Thanks
Cheers.
