Never "owned "one but had the "misfortune" of driving one.... my 3.3 lit MQ ( non turbo) has more get up n go, has 4 times the k's on the clock and runs 35" tyres compared to the stock factory one I drove.
Whilst the average "Joe Blow" may be satisfied with the rig as such there is a distinct need for more power once even the simplist mod is done ...IE: larger tyres , you state that " They would even live quite happily pushig around 33in tyres. ", where exactly ....back and forth on the flats of the Nullabour plains, and certainly with no added weight like passengers or a trailer as such, forget ever overtaking with any degree of safety unless a cut lunch is provided.
Please dont get me wrong but as far as a 4x4 goes I tend to place it in the "urban 4x4" league, fine as a daily commuter, excelent fuel ecconemy, and probably good on graded forest tracks and such, but as a vehicle that can be loaded up for an assult on the "round Australia" ritual with caravan and family in tow it just doesnt quite cut it, nor do I belive that the unit would suit an offroad application in either alpine or range usage as the power simply does not exist.
As most people know I run a 350 chev power plant, and there are times that it is "gutless" under extreame load and yes there are times that I wish I had installed a 454. Rembering my rig started out life as a L28 petrol (2.8 lits) and went from that to a red 253 V8, to a blue 4bbl 253 V8, to a 308 and now to a 350, the larger motors have allowed me more access to the much harder offroad routes and have provided me with the confidance to tackle such terains that I previously bypassed. Driver skill is also a contributing factor but again there are times that the vehicle simply doesnt cut it regardless of skill.
Having started 4x4ing in a LJ80 suzi ...yes the one with the 850cc 2stroke motor... my learnig curve was dramatic to say the least and it was kept in check only by the mods I did and the powerplants that came and went both in the suzi and the patrol.
Reading other posts throughout "outerlimits", there is a large number of "power" querys, by passing on my experiance with these vehicles then maybe "87white60" may purchase a more powerfull unit that may better serve his needs right from the word go instead of placing a post tittled "how do I get more power", or spending a constant stream of $$ trying to get a more suitable power plant or finally giving up and placing it in the 4 sale section and saving up for a more suitable unit yet again.
Never see a post tittled
" How do I restrich this overpowered monster I have under the bonnet?"
Why did you do the mods ( zorst ) on yours..chasing a tad more grunt or just for the add DB's?
Thats just my logic anyway !!
