Outer Limits 4x4 Board

Has anyone replaced the seal where the steering shaft goes into the steering box (power steering)?
Mine has started to leak over the weekend and was wondering if there were any tips or tricks to replacing it.

Replaced the seal on the weekend.

Seal is a AP8096E double lip seal 19mmIDx32mmODx7mm wide, about $6 each.
Daihatsu does not recognise that this seal exists so had to get it from a bearing/seal mob (SKF, CBC etc)

Accessed steering box through drivers side wheel arch.
Removed unijoint from steering box input shaft
Wiped all the crap from around outside of seal and spline.
Marked steering box nut location with centrepunch mark. (so i can get the same preload/clearance on bearing when tightening)
Unscrewed nut using a pin punch (p/s fluid runs out untill resevoir is empty)
Removed old seal from nut and put in new one.
Tightened back up to mark.
Put steering shaft back on.
Bled p/s system and all is good again..

That was a problem some months ago but i didnt know that SKF had that stuff. I just gave 10 euro to fix it to an engineer with the same part.

I was doing some research on the weekend and according to the manual the steering box has it's own oil supply and should be checked regularly!

(So, if you've had a leak it would pay to take the top inspection plug out and check you've still got oil in it.)

I think you wil find that is for the normal steering box.

The powersteering box uses the powersteering fluid as the lube as well as for the hydraulic function.

Ahhh... OK, you might be right there as I forgot about some being non assisted.

BTW I just checked the manual and it isn't too clear.
