Why don't they work? Why are they there? - the big rectangular tinted ones on the body I mean. Or is it just mine that don't work
us americans have our lights on the body... not on the bumper... as it looks better.. ALOT better! i would suggest changing those lights if you fellas wish. if you want. i'm even willing to source some here at some wreckers and ship em over to anyone whos interested... like i said.. they are awesome!

oh well sounds like it might not be too hard to rig up?
The prob I have is that being a '93 model (with a manly non-chrome grill ) I dont have a high mounted rear window stop light, and with just the bumber ones its a bit hard to see, especialy at night with the lights on.

Lighting regs in the ADR's were changed around 1990, making the new standard for taillights to be in the rear bumper as opposed to the body. You will notice on the GQ nissans and mavericks of the era having taillights in the body pre '90, and taillights in the bumper after the change. It has a lot to do with visibility from certain angles, the spare wheel on the rear door has a lot do with reducing the vis, hence the move to the bumper with the lights. On my mav the plastic lenses are on the body, but the internal fittings are not there, neither are the cables.
Perhaps you could inspect the globes and lenses for cleanliness. The problem with tungsten filament globes (which is what we all have in our taillights and interior lights) is that over time the tungsten filament burns away in the globe, these tungsten particles then bond to the inside of the glass bulb, reducing the light output, heating up and decreasing the life of the bulb. Check your bulbs, if they look blackish, replace them all, and clean the inside of your lenses, you may find this is all you need to do. and clean the terminals, use a bit of vaseline to prevent corrosion on the contacts.
So instead of reworking the design of the cab to remove the lights, the lenses remain (without light fixtures) as a cheap way out for the manufacturer.

54 is correct. It has to do with the ADR regs regarding vision of rear lights from angles. The door mounted spare hinders vision, so they were moved to the bumpers. You could source a set of taillights from an earlier model and fit them. They are all the same size and fit. Then go to a decent auto electrical shop and make up a set of piggyback plugs, so you can plug both sets into your original wiring. You can also do this for your trailer wiring. Much better than using troublesome "scotch clips".

I saw an early model Aus Rocky today that had the working rear lights- looked to be exactly the same lights (as someone has already mentioned). So a trip to the wrecker might find some that'll bolt into a Feroza. I know the wiring loom for the rear lights runs through the rear left quarter panel and then out the bottom of the vehicle, so it wouldn't be too hard to splice them in.
Also saw a white late model Feroza today with a snorkel. Looked like a factory job- not home made.
