Hilux 2.4 diesel to 2.8 diesel engine conversion
I was wondering if any one has had any experience with this conversion. I have been told it should bolt straight in weather this is true or not and weather it has a significant power change will probably be the main two questions. I will be using the same turbo I have on the 2.4 with new extractors and I will play with the boost.
I was considering using the 3ltr turbo diesel but have been told it uses an electronic throttle and it may be I little harder to set up.
I want to stay with a diesel motor and do not want a v8 if any one has any other motor suggestions (other than a commodore v6) I will be happy to take this on board.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers to all.

I do not want to poach this 3L but it has been a few weeks and no reply so I want to say that I am interested in buying it. Why are you selling it and has it got a fuel pump from a 2.4 Litre on it, I have been told they blow smoke and are less fuel efficient with the 3l fuel pump. ps this is my first time on this forum. Like a virgin, replying for the very first time!

Yes its more or less 2.4 out and 2.8 in. You could always go for the 5L engine, the 3litre version in the 2.4L, 2.8L series.
If you want the 1KZ turbo 3.0, its well worth it.

Beautiful i thought that was the case yeah i wasn't shore about the 5L motor because i was worried it would be a little harder to set up where the 3L would be pretty straight forward
but if any one has done either of these conversions before any info would be appreciated
has any one seen a cruiser turbo diesel motor in a Hilux or an i just dreaming??

Have done this conversion in my hilux. Simple swap, everything bolts in no trouble, you will however need a 3L clutch as the 2L is somewhat smaller, the 3L alternator and clutch fan is different to 2L as well. As for the turbo, what 2L have you got it on now? If it is the earlier one with a alloy rocker cover you will need a different manifold for your turbo. The manifold from a later model surf 2LT fits no problem.
Hope this helps ya.

Is all the wiring a straight swap too???
is the 2L radiator adequate to cool the bigger motor?
any difference between 2L and 3L engine mounts?
fuel lines etc, I understand the 3L doesn't have a manual primer or something? (Sorry I know little about diesels.)
Theres a 90% chance will be doing this to dads LN65 in the next year or so; just want to get any info while a thread is active.

Wiring is all the same, I took mine to the auto elecy to have the alternator wired as the 3L has a built in regulator, cost $50 for that.
The radiator is more than ample, engine mounts are the same, fuel lines are the same to. Yes a 3L does have a manual primer, use your existing one from the 2L. Make sure you get a 3L with a solid axle sump. The ifs models have a different sump and will bash on the diff locator, if you can't get one just swap the sumps from the 2L to the 3L.

a 5L will bolt in pretty much like a 3L will, but a 5L-E is a bitch to wire up because of the EFI-you might as well fit a 1KZ-TE.
3.0TD is a new enigne mounts job.

Diggin it up a lil bit.
I want to do this to my 2l lux - drop the 3l in. My lux atm doesnt have air con or power steering which I want. If I get a 3l with all the aircon gear still on it and a power steering pump will it all just bolt in and work with what I have now?

im dropping a 1KZ-TE into mine in the near future- priced a halfcut KZN185 from Rolin Imports in queensland for $5500, and $600 to freight it to Adelaide (big, heavy halfcut)
Not bad considering i was told to rebuild the 2.8 properly i wouldnt get much change from $6000- New internals, cleaned up block and bottom end, new fuel pump and injectors...
Add $2000 for a turbo kit, and your up to $8K, and you still have a 2.8D engine you started with!
SHOULD be able to get away with fitting a 1KZ-TE with R151 gearbox for around $10K
Halfcut: $6000
Transfer Adaptor $550
Install costs $3500 odd - Me doing most of the work.
