EGT's on a N/A Diesel

after searching and reading 5-6 threads on EGT's with turbos i was wondering if there is any change in recommended max temp when your talkin about N/A diesels..?

From what I have read it seems that 550ish is the absolute max you should run with a turbo (post turbo egt gauge)..

having just got my pyro working today and testing it out up a local hill i noticed it climb to about 600c for about 10-15sec's. this was 3rd gear at about 2500rpm. now i usually drive this hill every day when driving to work and wonder if its pushing the limits of the engine and what i can safely push it to.

the engine is a toyota 3B which has piston skirt cooling, would this be a factor when considering max egt's? I hear its good for when you turbo these donks. does this mean it could handle a higher max temp N/A?

the sender is about 1ft away from the manifold (where the extractors join to 1 pipe).. so would that mean the actual egt's as they exit would be a little more ??

now that the guage is fitted and working i might see what i can do to lower the egt's a bit (if you guys reckon its too high). I have previously fiddled with the fuel screw to try and eliminate some excessive black smoke, but in doing so i could of not trimmed teh fuel enough. now with the pyro at least i can know what i need to do to find a a good balance..

thanks.

On a NA engine you'll normally run into black smoke before your temps get too high. It's only the addition of a turbo that allows you to truely melt your engine.

The max temp for a NA engine is the same as having your EGT probe before the turbo, so about 750 deg C, put whatever safety factor on that you're comfortable with.
But yes you do want the probe as close as possible to an exhaust port.

I did an experiment on my shorty when n/a, highest I could get egt on the standard manifold at the flange to engine pipe was 790c. That was 100kph, full throttle for over 5 mins. Once it hit 650- 700 or so it took a while to go higher.

So dont be scared.

We use Fahrenheit in Panama. We try to stay below 1250 F.. That would be 675 C. I blow way too much black smoke before I reach 1250 F, unless I'm pulling!

cool guys.. thanks for the feedback.. if that is the case i think i'll leave the fuel screw as it is.. It only maxes out at 600c and only for a few seconds .. i dont see that much black smoke so i hope ive got it just about right..
