Can 285/75 16s' fit under the gq without a lift?

They may rub on the flares slightly. Also on max uptravel they will rub on the inside of the rear wheel arch.
I had them with a small lift on a swb gq and found them to be a very good size.

And yes GQ's came out with 31's on a 15"rim plus a couple of other sizes. They also came out with a narrow small tyre about the same size as a hilux, 29" I think. PLus 235/85R16 on 16x6 rims which where also fitted to Navars.

which are close to 32's... 31.72 in

personally I dont think you would do it. I had 33's with a 2-3-4-6+inch lifts, and they are nice with a 2inch lift.

I'm running 275/16/75 road tyres under non lifted and they are fine in road driving.

Are you talking off road conditions?

Is there much of a difference between 275 and 285...?

Made bugger all when I went from 265 to 275.

Yes, i was thinking off road conditions. Although two friends of mine had 90/91 gq utes and didnt have a problems, even though they use them for work (on a farm), in fairly rough offroad conditions So I imagine that the problems (if there are) would exist in the rear of the wagon.They each have Dunlop Mud rovers and swear by them.

wagons and utes are totally different items in relation to suspension and clearance.. Try your mates tires on and go for a drive..

wagons n utes are the same chassis (if coil sprung), diffs n suspension, so how are they different? Only difference is rear gaurds on the wagon.
The only prob you might have would be at full flex on the compression side the tyre might grab the outer edges of the rear gaurd or flare.

this link allows you tyo calculate the exact conversion, that siad just because the tyre placard says 31" or 305/75R16 it doas not mean the tyre is physicially that size

I am running the 285/75-16 claws on a 3" lift with no issues. Standard fittment on the '93 with alloys 265/70-16 so not much diff there really

claws are a smaller size than true size

33x10.5/r15 BFG AT's for city drivin. and 285/75/r16 BFG MT's for weekend work. 95 GQ LWB with 2 inch lift. front axle has been shifted forwards with a "Big balls offroad" spacer( about 20mm ) gives the 285/75's flare & mudguard clearance. rear flares catch when on tuff stuff but haven't snapped them yet... but they are missin a few tabs. Very happy with both tyre sizes .
