A few coily questions

g'day,

I have been searching for a few things the past few days but i only found little bits of what i needed to know.

1. What is involved in swapping a leaf sprung transfer case(parts needed, time, cost)?

2. What is involved to fit a Jimny front locker in the front?

3. Can any shock be turned into a strut with a coil seat welded onto it?
Is it a wise idea to get a them professionally welded?

4. Are lockers readily available for the rear?

Any help will be appreciated

Cheers,
Sean

1: you need both t case mounts, the flanges on the case, the jack shaft, and the shift lever.

2:you need to machine/ grind the housing where the centre fits in and change the studs slightly

3: yes. you will need to sleeve the shock where you mount the coil hat to, most of the time you will need to machine the centre hole out on the coil hat also.. pro weling is better as most shocks have thin walls and it doesnt take bugger all to burn through them releasing the oil.

4: yes they are jimny, bolt straight in you will need to change the crown wheel though, it is bolt on also.

cheers mark

In Fact, OFFROADFREAK, any locker suitable for a Sierra rear will go in a coil rear. No machining or custom work is required.

Why do you need to change the tailshaft? Mud4B's list covers everything. I have swapped a leaf case (actually a 1.0litre case) into a coil car and no change was required to the rear driveshaft.

Jimny's are 4.09:1, or 4.3 in some autos (apparently) Coil sierras are 4.11.

Bearing this in mind Mud4B, why can't a whole jimny third member be swapped into the front of a Coiler? Has anyone tried this? Could be easier than the machining etc.

shock absorber welding is something of a black art. Also, Coil sierra shocks are very small diameter, and need to be to fit up inside the shock tower. This limits wha shocks can be used. I have seen Koni's valved and with the seat welded on for t his application but it wasn't cheap and there was no meaningful increase in travel.

Hi-Jack
Why so much lift, and still on zook diffs?
Oh, and damn turn the caps lock off.
